John Buchanan was born in Lexington, Fayette Co., Kentucky, a son of John Buchanan and Nancy Ann Bache on 25 Jan 1825. John married Adeline Coons on 23 Feb 1851. He married Sarah Wilkinson 28 Apr 1866. The family settled in Manti and was one of the early Pioneers of the area. They suffered many of the hardships of that day. As the pioneers came west John was then the oldest brother in the home. So when Captain Allen from the United States Army approached them and asked the company for 500 men to fight for the U.S. in the Mexican War. John joined in what was known as the Mormon Battalion and he was listed as a Corporal in Company D. He left his family at Mt. Pisgah in Iowa and they marched on to Santa Fe, New Mexico where many of the company had taken ill. The officers decided to send those that were ill to Pueblo, Colorado and assigned John who was also ill to be a guard and aid for this small detachment. Gangrene developed in the resulting wounds and was considered to have contributed to his death years later. As spring approached, the entire camp was anxious to go on. Eleven of the men were assigned to go ahead of them and cut a passage out for those to follow. These eleven men were responsible for the "Mormon Trail" in the vicinity of Laramie, Wyoming. John was one of these eleven men. John Buchanan is listed on the "This is the Place" Monument near Emigration Canyon as being among the first 147 to enter the Salt Lake Valley. Sometime later John left with Brigham Young and several other church leaders to travel back to Iowa to join the remaining Saints and escort them to the Salt Lake Valley. When they arrived at Mt. Pisgah late in October, 1847 John had been away from his family for 15 months. John and Adeline had eleven children, eight survived to adulthood. John and S^rah had eight children, the last two died in infancy and their second child died at age five. John Buchanan died October 11, 1897 at the age of seventy-two in Manti, Sanpete County, Utah. He was buried on October 14, 1897 in the Manti City Cemetery. text journals and accounts, including the diaries of William Woodward and Levi Savage, and an account by John Chislett, written some years after they arrived in Salt Lake.
