last at the officers mee the morning a letter was real by county president electa bulled from mrs F B wells territorial president urging tho import anca of bending three delegates to ats lanta georgia botho triennial national convention this important question wai loft to be presented to the conven tion en mass business of the past year was discussed and made at p m the convention met elects bollock in the chair after the opening exercises the min atea of the last convention were read corrected an approved the election of county officers for the ensuing beai aavo the following results mrs electa bullock president mrs mary john lat vice president mrs marilla vice president mrs ellen jakeman secretary mrs M assistant secretary mrs malena wilbina treasurer mrs ellen jakeman chairman executive board with caroline manila and johanna patten of provo arb lapish of american fork mrs stewart of pleasant grove mrs gaddy of lehi mrs bober of ville and mrs lewis of spanish pork aa anem bers of the board UON JOHN B BOOTH who was present by special invitation was presented bv tha chairman and gave the badiea a very practical talk the following being a synopsis I 1 congratulate myself when I 1 loofe over the email audience here today that it was the speaker who was advertised that prevented people from coming out and not I 1 I 1 think it was three years ago that I 1 stated my in thia room on a similar occasion that within five years the women of utah would lave their franchise I 1 still believe that you have converted the people of this territory and both political parties bied with each other in making it clear that they intended to restore the ballot to the women of utah ae a measure and I 1 be lieve that both parties wera honest in their and therefore suffrage is coming however there is a vast amount of difference between a promise eiben when something is wante 1 fulfillment of that promise when the object bought is gained I 1 you are confronted at the present moment by two questions flow are we going to get our ballott and when obtained what are we going to do with it aa I 1 have had some little experience in legislature assemblies I 1 would advise you not to do too much lobby work I 1 do not like hobbyists lobbyists myself they alway annoyed and antagonized me when a party or mem bers have pledged themselves on a tion it is aa well to assume that tasy are sincere if there are members who arc doubtful do your lobby work before the convention meets there is plenty of wore for you to do you will probably meet as much opposition from your own sex if not more than from the men you need to act wisely and discretely you should have a vote and I 1 want to see you get it are you ready for it some of you are but not all not even a majority educate your delves for the places you will be eligible to fill I 1 gaye you all a cordial invitation to attend the of the school board and become familiar with its duties that will bd one of the first ollices that women will be called to oc cupy and there has nover been a res ponce to that invitation I 1 asked you to wait on sessions of the city council and become familiar with its duties and privileges and I 1 think two or three ladies cams once of the calls that have been made to have taxes remitted and men call ven frequently for that purpose too th franchise ia a sacred duty and a great power for bood or evil there was a negro in the nouh elected to congress it soon became known that his vote was for sale on evary question when a remonstrated with him he claimed that his vote like the planters cotton was hia to sell to the highest bidder lidies will never bell their vota but politicians are artful and an eloquent speaker can almost convince you that black ia and I 1 the lesa actual practical knowledge know ledga yon the greater the danger of your accepting sophistry for loic kaad in the line of your aspirations become in formed in parliamentary law and nae it knowledge ie ony good when you use dofita man liht possess alie wisdom of solomon it he was dumb and could not write 0 what aae would hia wisdom be form classes in civil government take that up and kindred subjects with a competent teacher and do not seak to excuse yourselves because borne men are ignorant if they I 1 make mistakes go and see it will you 80 far as I 1 am concerned 1 esteem the person who makes mistakes as far the superior of the person who does nothing see what tha women have done in colorado aliey have re deemed that state from ills than can be aliened both political parties colorado is proud of her women and all good citizens are proud of the stand they took when it hesed with them to redeem elate utah ia just aa proud of her women an many women here are juet as capable and well posted the last time my mother voted through flome misunderstanding the conveyance expected did not arrive and although be was sixty ebe walked aix miles to the polling place to baat her ballot I 1 as a rule women will vote right what chev lack in experience they make up in instinctive ander of right and arons get ready for the ballot and when it comes aae it the best yon can my convictions mv jiahe mv mathiea are with yon U thin conven tion fails to make it vision I 1 abal be very much pointed if at any time I 1 can adist you remember that I 1 am raddy and willing to respond MK J E of springville Spring ville addressed the cove tn with ganv encouraging remarks H has been always an earnest advocate and a willing helper in the cause buace will not permit a full report af hia ie marks reports were made bv mrs gadey 0 ashi birac laliah of fork mrs lewis of spanish fork and mrs bayer of springville Spring ville bv leiter lei ter the lady beine too ill to attend all the reports tended to show the associations in condition the question of sending delegates to atlanta was put before the house and after a warm debase wherein inacy prominent members the opinion that money and energy al be used in alie ahme campaign and that the national should be called upon for help this year while others as stout ly maintained eliat the territorial president was in a position to see both sida of the question and her one delegate was nomi a delegate ia sent thia year mrs marilla daniela will be that delegate with the unanimous consent of the convention A vote of thanks was tendered the ra
