Show December 31, 1996 Page Citizen, Free Press, Review 12 Don't be the fly in the World Wide Web If you havent yet discovered the wonders of the Internet, you may feel a little like the fly being lured into the spider's parlor when it comes to the World Wide Web. Without some direction, the vast amount of information available may have little practical value without some means of receiving assistance. The purpose of this column is to share information about the Internet and the World Wide Web in order to make the Internet manageable and useful. Web sites will be listed in bold face; these addresses should be typed in the URL location box (it may be labeled "Go to:") on your Internet software. Be careful to use punctua tion as listed, including the lower case usage. If you know of sites that would interest readers in the north Utah County area, or if you are aware of changes to information listed in this to: column, please send paperboyIvinet.com Web addresses start with http:l I. Some Internet software programs automatically include that part of the address. If your program does not add that part for you, simply type it in as written. The two slashes are followed by the main part of the address, which usually, but not always, starts with www (for World Wide Web) and a period. The company or organization name, or an abbreviation, comes PL Grove Irrigation Co. annual meeting The annual meeting of the stockholders of the Pleasant Grove Irrigation will be held Company Saturday, Jan. 11, 1997 at 2 p.m. in the board room at Pleasant Grove City Hall. At that meeting, two members of the Board of Directors will be elected, the Financial Report will be given, the writing two days prior to the president will give his report, and the Watermasters will make reports. Any other business that may properly come before the assembled stockholders will be considered at that time. Anyone with items for the agenda should submit same to the secretary in date. Finally, the last three letters specify the type of organization represented. Com, an abbreviation of commercial, is perhaps the most common. Other suffixes include edu for educational institutions, org for organizations and gov for government departments. As an example, the address for Chevron is www.chevron.com while the address for Brigham Young University is www.byu.edu Be aware that there are varia tions to these formats, they are only given as a skeleton guide to finding different sites on the web. If you don't know an address, you may simply want to try different combinations; if the site does not exist, the software will simply inform you that it could not make contact When saying or hearing the addresses, it is customary to say "dot" for period. For example "www dot byu dot edu." This is assuming that the httpil I is already included.
