Show LIFETIMES 17 H.lltcp Times Oct. 11, 1991 Eagle plaques given for CFC donation; by Dixie Cordova Combined Federal Campaign chairperson The prestigious Eagle Club, which was created by the Utah United Way as a campaign promotion idea, has been so successful that several other United Way organizations in other states have expressed interest in creating their own Eagle Clubs. To become an Eagle Club member, an individual must donate $250 per. year to CFC. The contributor is also awarded an eagle plaque built by a sheltered workshop in Ogden. The workshop is one of the many organizations sponsored by CFC funds. The CFC uses its funds sparingly. The workshop that makes the eagle statue on the plaque receives $13 per eagle, which is paid from the overhead budget of United Way of Northern Utah. This budget is kept at a low 13 percent so that the bulk of the monies collected are directed to benefit those in need. The overhead budget also covers employee salaries, costs of all brochures, posters, pledge cards and other materials distributed throughout the Utah campaign. Lynda Cooper, third year Eagle, says, "My dad was sick for about 10 years. He was on a dialysis machine until he passed away. In those days you had to go to Salt Lake City for dialysis." Then, the hospital and a agency loaned the CFC-supporte- d family a dialysis machine so that he could be treated at home. "I was young at the time, but I remember that every two or three months, a truckload of medical supplies was brought to our house." she said. "We never paid for any of that. It must have been over $4,000 a month, so my contributions go to the agen- - (ff) cies that helped us so much." Some have simply seen the good that charitable contributions can do. That is why Charles Harlin, a computer systems analyst in the 1881st Communications-Computer Systems Group, became an Eagle Club member this year. "I've been involved with CFC for years and have always donated. I decided to kick it up a bit this year and see what happens." Harlin has had an opportunity to look into the various ways CFC funds are used, and said, "I was surprised at how many organizations are helped by United Way and CFC." TSgt. Gary W. Fought, a second year Eagle, chooses to designate the organization that receives his donations. He says, "There are so many, I'd rather send my contributions to agencies that promote my personal concerns. I feel that the contri butions I make are valuable assets to the organizations I choose." These people and hundreds like them have made the Eagle Club a unique and prestigious club to belong to. "It says, 'I care about my fellow man and I want to do something,' " says Rosina Griego, a records and forms technician. Griego became an Eagle this year for sentimental reasons. "You always plan to get involved, but never seem to find the time. I figured this way I could at least start. It's kind of a beginning to get involved with the things I've always wanted to do," she says. Griego summed it up this way, "You always say you never have the money, but the truth is, you never really don't have it." EMERY-RIDDL-E AERONAUTICAL UNIVERSITY NOW OPEN!
