Show Page 4 THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Volume X Issue III May 15, 2004 Layton, Wild Bird Center Nature/Bird Walk Schedule Take a Walk on the Wild Side! Join us for a free Nature/Bird Walk observing birds, mammals, butterflies, dragonflies, wild flowers, and other natural elements as we encounter them. The walk is often a “ride” in the car, which makes a great blind. When we do walk, areas are normally wheel chair accessible and a low degree of difficulty. We meet at the Wild Bird Center between 7:30 a.m. and 7:45 a.m., and depart the store at 8:00 a.m., unless otherwise posted. Dress for the weather and bring binoculars (loaners are available). Bring the whole family. It is a great way to introduce children to nature. Call 801525-8400. The Wild Bird Center is located at the Layton Market Center, exit 335 off I15, (across from Barnes & Noble), 1860 North 1000 West, Layton. This production is a two-act play written and directed by Nell Heller of Ogden. Nell graduated with a BA degree in theater from LSU, and did graduate work at Kansas University. She has been a teacher, actor, director, and producer in various theaters around the country. She is affiliated with AFTRA, SAG, and EQUITY. The play is called “The Rearin of Jonithan Edward Schofield.” Jessie Schofield has worked hard in the “holler” of Appalachia, trying to raise Jonithan and Ellie while her husband Auren works in the coalmines that cause black lung disease. She does the laundry of the city folk while hoping to escape the stigma of being one of the “holler people.” Auren, however, has accepted his life as something he can’t change. He escapes through childlike dreams that he and Ellie conjure up. Jonithan will soon graduate from high school. Jessie is determined that he receives a scholarship so he may escape and, by doing so, she too may “be somebody and never have to beg or grovel to nobody again.” Nell Heller wrote this play out of her experiences with the people who lived in such dire circumstances in the Appalachia during the 1950’s. The play has larger meaning than the problems of this one group of people; it is a part of our human psyche to have aspirations of rising above our station in life. Some, like Jessie, have the drive to make things better for themselves and their family. We hope as the audience is drawn into Jessie’s struggle, they will come away with new insights after being involved intellectually and emotionally. The cast features Cathleen Mason, Pleasant View, as Jessie; and Tracy Socwell, Ogden, as her husband Auren. Alex Jones, an Ogden High School student, plays Jonithan. Kelsey Socwell, as Ellie, is a student at St. Joseph Middle School. Nicole Mason and Pat Layton of Washington Terrace complete the cast playing the parts of Julie Larkin and Mrs. Whitmore, respectfully. The play will run at the Eccles Community Art Center May 20, 21, 22. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., curtain at 7:00. A matinee will be held on Saturday, May 22 with doors opening at 1:30 p.m., curtain at 2:00. Tickets: $5 each. Please call Debra or Donna at 801-392-6935 to reserve your ticket. Ogden Valley Library Update Ilona R. Fellows Art Exhibit on Display The Weber County Library’s Ogden Valley Branch is pleased to present a new art exhibition featuring the artwork of Ilona R. Fellows. The exhibit will be on display May 2 through June 3. Ogden artist Ilona R. Fellows has been painting for over twenty years. Her formal training began at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. She has taken numerous workshops and classes including a workshop with master pastelist Albert Handell. Her work has been in juried shows, and she has exhibited at the Carriage House located in the Eccles Community Art Center. Her love of nature and her daily hikes provide endless subject matter for her landscape paintings. Working in a series gives an artist the opportunity to explore a subject and create a body of work that reflects a deeper look into that subject. The turtle series began about four years ago after a trip to the big island of Hawaii. Walking through the rocky shoreline provided Fellows’ inspiration for the series. Finding a sea turtle to photograph became an obsession for her. Fellows’ painting process was experimental in many ways and has resulted in both realistic and impressionistic paintings. Her recent works can be seen at the Bartholomew Frame Co. in Ogden.
