Forest Service Announces Scoping Document for Review The Ogden Ranger District of the WasatchCache National Forest is proposing to update its Travel Management Plan. The Plan designates public and permitted use of roads and trails by motorized vehicles. The current travel plan was written in 1988, with one amendment created in 1991. In February, the Wasatch-Cache National Forest revised the Land and Resource management Plan. This Forest Plan guides all natural resource management activities and sets management direction for this Forest. The forest Plan designated a Management Prescription to each acre of land to guide in restoring or maintaining its identified priority. The transportation system must facilitate these management prescriptions. Also identified in the Plan is a Forest-wide objective of updating the Ogden Ranger District Travel Management Plan. Other purpose and needs for the proposed plan update are: Motorized uses are increasing rapidly in areas close to population centers like Ogden. New technologies have changed the vehicles used on the transportation system that must be addressed in the management plans. Current problems are occurring that must be corrected to reduce the negative impact to any and all resources. And finally, the map available to the general public showing the open system of roads and trails needs to be improved to be more usable. In order to change the designation of a road or trail from motorized to non-motorized, or vice versa, an environmental analy- sis (EA) must be completed. The Forest Service has completed a Scoping document briefly describing the purpose and need, desired future condition, and what changes are being proposed. They are soliciting thoughts and comments on these proposed changes so that they can provide a transportation system that meets the recreational and business needs of users. An electronic copy of the scoping document can be found at http://www.fs.fed.us/wcnf/projects/proposed.shtml on the Forest Service web site. You may also obtain a copy by contacting the Ogden Ranger District office at 625-5112. The scoping document describes 28 specific changes to the current plan. If you would like a copy of the current Travel Plan for the Ogden and Logan Ranger Districts, you can obtain one at the Union Station on Wall Avenue in Ogden, or at the Ogden Ranger District office. Public comments will be taken until August 22, 2003. Wasatch-Cache Forest Supervisor Thomas L. Tidwell is the responsible official for this project. Comments can be mailed or delivered in person to the Ogden Ranger District, Attention: District Ranger, 507 25th Street, Ogden Utah 84401; Fax: (801) 625-5914; Email: rvallejos@fs.fed.us. You may use any format you prefer in responding to these proposals. Please use the reference numbers assigned to each project proposal if possible. Submissions you make and identifiers therein will be available for public review. Utah Musical Theatre’s “Kids Act Up” Summer Camp at PET It’s not too late to sign up for Kids Act Up Summer Camp! Presented by Utah Musical Theatre, Weber State University, and Peery’s Egyptian Theater, Kids Act Up is a three-week intensive theater arts summer camp for children entering grades six through nine. The camp takes place weekdays August 4 through August 22 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Taught by local and visiting Utah Musical Theatre professionals, campers learn all aspects of stage production from acting, voice, and movement, to directing, design, marketing, and management. Held at Peery’s Egyptian Theater during UMT’s residence, Kids Act Up offers an insider’s view of theater production through workshops, rehearsals, and demonstrations, culminating in a showcase performance on the Egyptian Theater stage. “As the Wasatch Front’s premiere musical theatre producer, Utah Musical Theatre inaugurated Kids Act Up as a natural extension of our commitment to our community’s cultural foundation,” said Bruce Cohen, Artistic/Managing Director of UMT. “Now, with the addition of our special partnership with Peery’s Egyptian Theater, we can offer young artists the chance to learn from some of Utah’s most skilled professionals in one of Utah’s finest theater facilities.” For more information send and email to peerysegypt@weber.edu or call (801) 3953345. I was honored to have been asked to jury the entries. To jury close to two hundred works of art by some of Utah’s most talented artists might seem like an arduous task. However, I found it stimulating and a learning experience as well. We are fortunate in Utah to have such a vibrant, creative community of visual artists. I am always amazed at the variety of approaches, response to historic and contemporary themes and, quite simply, the willingness to take brush, pen or pencil in hand and create art. Given the uncertain, unsettling times in which we live, it is somehow proper and reassuring to know that the making of art transcends, uplifts, poses questions we should try to answer and challenges us to really look at our world. I congratulate all of the artists who participated in this year’s show.” After the Statewide exhibition, the Purchase Awards will remain at the Art Center for exhibition in the center’s permanent collection, and for use in their docent program Art To Go, which takes art in to local Elementary Schools. The Eccles Community Art Center would like to invite the public to view the art of the 29th Annual Statewide Competition. The Art Center’s regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and Saturdays, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The center is closed on major holidays, including July 24th, in celebration of the Days of ‘47. The exhibit continues through August 30, 2003. Admission is free.
