Show Arts and Entertainment Jhursda7JoycmbrJ51990 Joe Hill is brought to life by the CEU theatrical department The College of Eastern Utah's second theatrical production The Man Who Never Died will be presented Nov 29 through Dcc1 in the Geary Theater The play was chosen because it is about a historical character Joe Hill This month marks the 75lh anniversary of his death Hill was an inspirational leader to the Industrial Workers of the World also known as “Wobblics” a militant section of the labor movement at that time Hill as a Union leader stood for the rights of the working man and has been an important influence in Utah's Labor Unions Dian Henderson the play director feels that the play will make students become aware of what Joe Hill stood for The piece also gives a good opportunity for the audience to explore similarities with what is happening in unions today Hill was shot in Utah at what is now Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake He had been found guilty of a murder but no connection was ever made between Hill and the minder of which he was convicted Several writings have been made in an attempt to uncover the truth about Hill unfortunately the entire story will never be known The bulk of trial records have mysteriously disappeared Hill is undeniably an important part of Utah's history his example lives on and teaches people that they need to speak out if they want to change the way things are The cast consists of 17 actors and actresses in the ensemble production Each role helps to portray the symbol that Joe Hill has become According to Dian Henderson "If the rights of the middle class working person aren't upheld it is because they have chosen to become silent Maybe we need to stir ourselves up again" Tickets are on sale at the CEU cashiers window daily from nine to three "It is a piece that everyone should go see” said Henderson "It is a piece with a message" Joe Hill played by Mlchaal Shewmake gives a motivating speech In The Men Who Never Died front: Brandon Shaw Todd Handy Sean Ovlatt Tiffany Pierce Back: Brandon Fullmer Michael Shewmake (photo by Gordon Jensen) Chamber choir to chortle Haydn’s “Mass " In D Minor at Carnegie Hall next week Singers from The College of Eastern Utah will be traveling to New York November 25 to perform in Carnegie Hall with the Manhattan Philharmonic Orchestra The CEU Chamber Choir directed by Russell Wilson was invited to participate in a national assembly of outstanding junior college choirs in which they will be singing "Haydn's Mass in D Minor" There are 12 choirs that have been chosen from colleges across the country to participate in the performance which will be under the direction conductor Joseph Flummerfclt the of world-clas- s conductor of Westminster Choir College The trip will be five days in New York with plenty of time to experience the sights and sounds of New York City CEU Chamber Choir atudjes high class sophistication Front: Kristen Greenwood Valerie Huntsman Sheryl Ewell Kristen Andrus Middle: Daren Fairbanks Wendy Mattingly Krista Hansen Laura Frandsen Kathryn Crooksten Mindy West Back: Chad Wassmer Brandon Shaw Todd Handy Brad Gwyther Brian Spears Shae Hall Bradshaw (photo by Hatton Moore) An informal farewell reception for the choir will be held at noon on Wednesday Nov 21 in the music center The public CEU staff and students are invited to attend refreshments will be served and the choir will give a brief presentation of one movement of the "Mass" The "Mass" will be performed in its entirety later in the year |
