Show Cradle' opens Jan. 23 Special to The Signpost Marc Blitzstein's controversial musical drama The Cradle Will Rock" premiers Thursday, Jan. 23rd. at the Babcock Theatre. Blitzstein wrote both the text and music in the short time of five weeks, "at white heat" as he called it, during the summer of 1936. Originally directed by Orson Welles, then the director of Project 891, one of the WPA's Federal Theatre Project outlets, this musical takes place on the night of a union drive and has been described as a "play with music" in ten scenes with flashbacks. What makes Blitzstein's work unique is the way he wrote and set to music the speech patterns of a wide gamut of social classes. At the time, never before in an American musical work had a composer ren ) RCH ESTRA, his violin in accompaniment to the Chamber Orchestra while KUER morning host Jean Pack narrated the seasons sonnets. As the artists presented these "symphonic poems" the audience was captured in the many sounds of the seasons. The receptive listeners' emotions were aroused by the tunes that paralleled birds singing, quiet summer storms, hail falling, bees and hornets swarming and shivering, slippery ice in the wintertime. Silverstein's deep emotion and style captured the feelings of "The Four Seasons."
