Show Wednesday, January 22, 1992 Special Edition 7 Sixth annual festival was fun for all Hof, Germany carries a history that coincides with Ogden's past Staff writer of The Signpost A little piece of Europe came to Utah last weekend with the Sixth Annual Hof Winter Carnival. Three days of festivities turned downtown Ogden into a German village, with fun for all ages. Many people wonder how this winter tradition came about. Possibly even more people wonder where this festival got its name. What in the world is a Hof? Hof is actually a town in Germany. But this little town, population 55,000, is a different from any other town in the new unified Germany. Hof, Germany is the sister city of Ogden, Utah. Nestled between the Fitchel Hills and the Franconian Forest in Bavaria, the town of Hof has been around since the early 13th century. Ogden celebrates its sister city every winter in a traditional German style. Hof has been Ogden's sister city for 37 years, beginning when Raymond S. White was the mayor of Ogden. The sister city program was "organized to foster better international understanding, through cultural exchanges." Hof was once a major railroad junction, a history that coincides with Ogden's past. The city is a major producer of textiles now, with several cotton and woolen mills. The purpose of the festival is to honor Hof as Ogden's sister city. Winter sports from Utah are showcased in the celebration, including downhill and cross-country skiing, snow sculpting and broom hockey. Ogden wants to increase the traffic and enjoyment of the downtown area with the festival. The city also wants more exposure to winter sports in the Ogden area and an increasing awareness for the sister city program. Two dignitaries from Hof were present at the celebration to help with the opening ceremony Friday. Burgermeisterin Doris Weber and Peter-Michael Tshoepe, director of public relations for Hof, came to Ogden for the festival. Hof was once a part of West Germany, close to the East Germany border. The new unified Germany has created many changes to the people of Hof, as the old and the new come together at last. The destruction of the Berlin Wall, known simply as "the Wall," was a celebration for the people in 1989. Throughout the changes, the people of Hof remain optimistic about the future and express this optimism to the people of Ogden. This year's Hof Winter Carnival present a cultural opportunity between Germany and the United States that is beneficial to all. Support Your- Signpost Advertisers 9 9 Oca ) ah : !
