Show Commissioners turn "thumbs down" on Community Recreation Program Monies Stating the Iron County Schools "take care of the county's responsibility for funding," the county commissioners allotted no money to the Community Recreation Program during budget requests made by Cedar City Corporation in Wednesday's meeting. The commission did, however, grant more or equal amounts to what had been tentatively budgeted in other areas of city-county city-county cooperative programs. The commissioners said they were not counting on any payment-in-lieu money that may be in the wings but preferred to spend that after it was received from the federal government. The commission also said Cedar City could make another request concerning the recreation program at a later date if desired, The commission okayed as requested the $17,673 for upkeep and operation of the City-County Administration Building, $17,242 for Fire Department funds, and $10,000 for waste disposal. Airport budget Four thousand dollars was allotted to the Cedar Municipal Airport, although it was questioned by commissioner-elect commissioner-elect Jim Clark, who was in attendance along with Grant Seaman, also a newly elected commissioner. The Cedar City Municipal Library received $10,500 of budgeted county funds. The amount requested by Cedar City for the recreation program was approximately $9,000. In other action, representatives represen-tatives of the Parowan Town Council met with the commissioners com-missioners to discuss the consolidation con-solidation of Parowan City Police with the Iron County Sheriff's Department. The Parowan group said all money budgeted to the city police would be pledged to the county. Two cars, fully equipped would also come under County Sheriff Ira Schoppmann's direction, they said. Eliminate duplication The consolidation would eliminate duplication of service, Frankie Lou Bentley, speaking for the group, said. She said the city would come up with any salary differences. A preliminary contract will be drafted, the commissioners decided, and the consolidation will likely take place at the first of the year for a six month trial run. The commission also approved a county-wide ambulance franchise to Deseret Ambulance. The commissioners said they saw no reason not to grant the franchise, provided it wasn't an exclusive franchise. The commissioners also heard the first of budget requests from within the county, that of the County Attorney. Hans Chamberlain's Cham-berlain's budget request, up from last year, due, he said, to the need to hire a deputy county attorney and increased work load on himself, was approved. Stop order okayed Western Rock Company requested and received from the commission a stop of order on contract 29 (1), dealing with the paving of a road northwest of Cedar City. The stop ordered specified that Western Rock would have 12 days to complete the project as soon as good paving weather resumes in the spring. The commission also moved to cancel taxes for this year concerning con-cerning property owned by the Sons of Utah Pioneers on which monuments are erected. Representatives of the group stated this is the first year they have ever received such a notice. The commission heard various last minute tax compalints, the majority of which were advised to pay under protest and then attend to the meeting with the Utah Tax Commission on Monday. Other major action included: The combing of the Parowan and Paragonah County Justice Districts and Melva Barton was " retained as Justice of the Peace.. Garbage agreement pending County Attorney Hans Chamberlain was instructed to prepare a draft agreement between the county and D & O Sanitation for garbage pick-up in unincorporated parts of the county and management of the county's proposed landfill. Attorney At-torney Chamberlain will also continue to study prospects of a special service district for garbage service in the county. Art Walunas gave a financial status report on this past year's Iron County Fair and Rodeo. Walunas said present records show the fair taking a $1000 loss, although outstanding bills may reduce the deficit to $600. Walunas said the major cost that caused the loss was a $1300 plus price tag for Clint Walker. Walunas said although he took a risk, he felt it added class to the fair to have Walker present. |
