Show The Thursday November Eagle-pag- e "You owe the government by Kirsten Christensen x-amo- of money unt please pay immediately ! ! !" of a check there is a note that reads “you owe the government staff writer The extravagant amounts that state and federal governments are allowed to tax the people has gone too far At times when I receive my paycheck I fed like I have worked more hours to pay Uncle Sam mid Uncle Norm than I have worked to pay Uncle Smith (Food King) Uncle Landlord and Ma Bell There is an old cliche' that says “working affords me two luxuries of which I have become accustomed to: food and a roof over my head" But how many people can each of us be responsible to feed and house? I applaud programs which assist families who are in need However I have heard of and seen too many instances when the recipient of my hard earned tax dollar was simply a freeloader or someone who had other sources of income available to them Take for example Ronnie Reagan Jr When he was unable to find employment in ballet dancing his parents offered to help him He refused their help because he “wanted to make it on his own" So he went on welfare Docs anyone dare hazard a guess as to how many shoes Mrs Marcos bought with our taxes sent to the Philippines? At some point we have to say “Enough!" The proposed tax initiatives are a step in the right direction However it is a stumbling step that fell flat on its face The way the current scheme is worded it can be interpreted in such a way that we could actually end up paying higher property taxes So these initiatives are clearly not the answer to the increasing tax problem But there still needs to be an end somewhere in sight Considering the last Utah tax increase the largest one in history how long will it be until we pick up our paychecks and instead please submit immediately" Eventually we have to accept that there aren't enough funds to build pumps on the Great Salt Lake or add arm rests for pilots in airplanes There arc already too many worthy projects that have been offered up on the proverbial sacrificial altar A teacher atCarbon High School told me she hasn't had a in raise four years So because of cost of living increases and tax hikes she is actually earning less than four years ago We need to look again at the way our money is being used Last week an investigation by the General Accounting Office reported that in 32 months Secretary of State George Shultz had spent nearly S19 million tax dollars for his personal vacations A Christmas trip to his home in Palo Alto Calif for instance cost the taxpayers $256000 A golfing weekend to Augusta Ga cost $60877 including installation of special telephone lines The report said Shultz and his family fly in an Air Force plane which alone costs about $50000 per trip But in all fairness to Shultz he did reimburse the government the equivalent of economy air fare to his destinations $18783 or about one percent of the total cost Isn't that big of him I think it will be catastrophic if the proposed tax initiatives are made into law But regardless I think they have served a purpose They have brought the high tax dilemma to the attention of the state legislature Utah lax payers have had enough or more appropriately have given enough since the rest of my Well all I can do is put in my two-bimoney has gone to pay taxes ts Tax initiatives jeopardize Utah's education system by Patrick Dunn staff writer Utahns gathered around the Utah Stale Two thousand Capitol for a support rally on the Tax Initiatives A B and C on Saturday October 30 The “last hurrahing" at the capitol for supporters of the initiatives turned out to be a campaign rally for independent gubernatorial candidate Merrill Cook supporter of the initiatives Cook ignited the crowd with criticism of opposing candidates He aUacked Ted Wilson and Norm Bangerter for what he thought they would tell its participants about adjusting a household budget by six percent sign-wavi- Lee Mathle Editor iaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaMaaaaaaaBBaaaaaaaaMaaBaThcrcMi Feature Editor Chris Korenko Editor Entertainment MMaBBMaBBaaaaaaaafMMaaaMeBeMtaaaaaeeaMaaaaaaaeMa Slacee Fene iBSBBaaaaeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaBMaesaaaasaaaaa Sports Editor Jennifer Howard Mann Gina Travis Brackcnbury Reporters Kirsten Christensen Patrick Dunn Kristie Eliason Garth Frandscn Jan Halli-Ja- y Richard Hickmon Ragun Larkin Anna Murphy Renee Olsen Kathryn Painter Jake Shewmake Cordy West Denise Mori nos and Scou Warren Ham alter and Kirsten Christensen leMaMMMseaaaaaeaaeaeeea' Photographers Shane Knighton Business Manager aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaMi Turn Bisquera Editor aaaaMataaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiaaaaaaaaeaaaaaaaaaeaa Copy Advisor laNSNMaaiaaaaaaNaNi aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaai Susan A Polster Tht Eagle it the official student publication of iht College of Eaturn Ul Opinion!
