These $700,000 to $800,000 homes were as devastated as those in the 9th Ward. Sadly, we heard stories of looters helping themselves to people’s belongings after the National Guard broke the locks to check for survivors. The spray painted codes from the National Guard on the front of homes were a grim reminder of survivors or bodies that were found i in — home. the restaurants were closed because the owners either couldn’t afford to repair the damages or because a good number of their employees had moved away after the storm. Fast food restaurants were advertising their marquees their hourly wages of about $9.50 with an extra $200 bonus. Each day I we were assured by the people of New Orleans that the government was doing a good job of helping; the job was just so enormous that it was taking time to help everyone. The people that we were able to do work for, and even the people we met in stores, were so grateful that we had come to help. Each night on the local news about 80% of the broadcast is related to “Katrina.” You see, its not over for the people of Louisiana . They will be rebuilding for The church that we were working with has groups scheduled to come every week until June. But that won’t be enough to help their congregation of 500 and their neighbors. There is still so much more to do and not enough skilled tradesmen to do it. Some may have money to begin rebuild- would go to Home Depot or Lowes for building supplies. It would take me two to four hours to make the trip. Cars were lined up around the perimeter of the building to pick up drywall. Some days there was no drywall. Passing in the isles of the store was a challenge—to say the least. Since store employees wouldn’t even have a chance to put supplies and products out on the shelves before they were purchased, they began leaving them on pallets out on the floor. Each store had a number of security guards on hand to make sure there was order among so many frustrated shoppers. In the areas where buildings were not destroyed but “only” flooded, FEMA trailers were seen at many of the home sites along with heaps of trash from the “tear out’ their homes. These trailers are provided by the government to house families while they repaired their homes. While 20,000 trailers were delivered to the New Orleans area— 200,000 are needed. And these trailers only arrived three to four weeks ago. Some families then have to wait three to four weeks to get the power and propane hooked up.
