Letters to the Editor Reader Supports Rodeo Staying at Historic Arena Will the Pioneer Days Rodeo, a great Ogden tradition, survive the push from the Standard-Examiner that supports the County Commissioners’ recommended transfer of the rodeo to the Weber County Fairgrounds? It appears that the local media always supports the Weber County Commissioners, who are not always willing to listen to the voice of the people. The efforts of those opposing the relocation and those willing to go door to door to get the true opinion from the public, regarding where they want the rodeo held, should be greatly applauded. The overwhelming majority, including my own family and friends, look forward each year to enjoying the spacious, real west atmosphere of the outdoor stadium. We cast a vote for it to stay where we all cheer the skydivers as the traditional opening event. Thousands marvel at the picturesque, western setting. The near capacity crowd returns each year with fulfilled expectations of a real rodeo. The legacy of the Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo should not be jeopardized by moving its location. The people should not lay down to a few civic leaders who can juggle figures to get their way. Too many think that moving the rodeo would be a western tragedy. Hopefully, the community will continue to voice their support of keeping our great rodeo at its present location. Your letters will make a difference. Kent Fuller Eden, Utah Utah Drivers Rude and Impatient On the afternoon of July 22, my wife and I tried to help a driver on I-15 southbound between Ogden’s 31st Street and Riverdale Road. The traffic was heavy, as usual, and I could smell smoke, but didn’t see any grass fire, etc. I continued to look and saw a pickup pulling a small boat that was burning. The driver had no idea his boat was on fire as he changed lanes to pass other cars. I moved to the outside and warned him that his boat was burning: that way he could pull off the highway and prevent an accident. It took awhile to get the attention of the pickup driver, but we finally succeeded. As we were helping this guy out, a driver behind crowded me and gave me the finger. Probably, we may have gotten the same treatment from the driver of the pickup. I told my wife afterward, “Thad did it, I’m not going to help out again.” Utah drivers are too impatient and the highway patrol does not enforce the speed limit. I presented the Weber County Commission with transcripts of testimony given by Dr. William Hirzy to the U.S. Senate concerning Fluoride’s dangers, and the EPA Union’s opposition to water fluoridation. Hirzy’s testimony, given on June 29, 2000, was curiously not covered by local news, although it’s astonishingly relevant to current local issues, and clean(er) water activists in Utah who are often painted as isolated yokels who just won’t comply. Status quo is the real commitment in the push for water fluoridation, far outweighing any commitments to health. Top toxicologists in the nation (none of whom have been represented here in Utah) are calling for a complete moratorium on fluoride, telling Congress that not a single double blind safety study exists on the actual chemicals being added to the water. Anyone with an interest in health or appropriate use of government is morally bound to sit bolt upright and re-examine previous assumptions about fluoride. I currently exercise a vote and the right to choose for myself and for my family. So does everyone else! I exercise my vote every time I shop or brush my teeth. I don’t know of a single person who desperately wants fluoride but can’t get access, yet I’m willing to donate $7/year to a fund rather than spend $6000 on a suitable filter system. To those who are so casual about usurping my legal right to choose, I can only say, “You have made a grave error.” The facts about fluoride’s dangers are being released in Washington D.C. at this moment, and I hope with hindsight you’ll learn to be less selfassured when you are assaulting my rights in the name of Democracy. By the way, I support appropriate Democracy, but I pledge my allegiance to a Republic, remember? Rachael Sweeten Ogden, Utah The deadline for material Tu/! Gmpsfodf! Dbuipmjd!
