To find out more about skin cancer and to learn how to prevent risks, the Utah County Health Department is sponsoring a free skin cancer screening clinic on Saturday, June 28 from 9 a.m. until noon at the Lehi Senior Center, 120 N. Center St., Lehi. There is no age limit, and the public is invited to attend. About one million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S. this year. About 80 percent of the new cases will be basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma (about 800,000 cases). Both basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma have a better than 95 percent cure rate if detected and treated early. About 1,200 people will die of basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma in 1997. There will be about 40,300 new cases of malignant melanoma in 1997, a 12 percent increase from 1995. 7,300 deaths will be attributed to malignant melanoma in 1997. Of these deaths, 4,600 will be men, 2,700 women. Older Caucasian males have the highest mortality rate. RideAmerica is a motorcycle event for riders, passengers and bikes of all types. This year's route will begin at the Utah State Fairpark and head up Emigration Canyon, to East Canyon, then back track to the Fairpark. Here are a few important things to remember: Don't trim trees near power lines. Watch for overhead power lines when moving irrigation pipe or operating heavy equipment. . Assume all downed power lines are energized and stay away from them. Don't climb trees near power lines. Stay away from substations or anything marked "Danger: High Voltage." Never install rooftop antennas or satellite dishes near overhead power lines. For kids to enter, all they have to do is draw a picture with an electric safety message and send it to Utah Power. They can create their own or pick one of the topics at left. CONTEST RULES Artwork must be the original hand drawn creation of the contestant and all contestants must be from 5 to 12 years of age. Limit one entry per person. Winners will be notified by July 15, 1997. Drawings should be horizontal x 11" size paper. The back of the artwork must have the on contestant's full name, age, address and phone number.
