Show Student Participation Committee modifies block seating program inclusion in the regular draw. For approximately every five group blocks, an independent section will be designated. The seating for independents will be on a first come best seat basis. The cheerleaders also plan to watch for spirited independents as well as groups and award them the best possible seating for the next game. The changing of the block seating system has become the center of much controversy among University organizations. ASUU and others feel that it is not possible to choose fairly five groups that have shown the most spirit. Perhaps eight or nine groups will show a similarly great amount of spirit. But the committee feels that the cheerleaders should be able to work with the most enthusiastic groups available In the past, consistently-spirited groups could have drawn bad seating each time, while other groups not intending to participate fully received choice seats. By Geoff Towns Staff Writer The system of block seating in Ute Stadium was discussed by the Student Participation Committee Sept. 30 and finally modified, to the dissatisfaction of Associated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU) and other groups. Previously the distribution of blocks was decided by a straight draw. Each University group took its chances each game and had to sit in the section drawn for it or not show up at all, which happened often. Under the new system, the songleaders and cheerleaders will select the five groups that they think have shown the greatest amount of school spirit during the previous week and game, such as wearing red and white, making signs and cheering with the cheerleaders. These groups will be given their choice of preferred seating on the 30-yard line or . |
