Show current curren t comment on on utah 5 mines and prospects prospect the national encampment of the G A R during the past week eek brought thousands of visitors to salt lake and utah these people came from every part of the country and represented every phase of industrial action the majority of them came from the east and these especially espe cally ally marvelled marvellee marvel led that such a thriving commonwealth could exist in what to them appeared a barren country they were entranced by our beautiful city with the hustling activity the splendid homes the broad streets and the majestic mountains encircling it but after seeing all of these attractive features the question was invariably asked what supports all of this from what source does this wealth come salt lake is not a great manufacturing center nor is utah a great agricultural state when however our visitors had made a few side trips to our great mining camps there was no need to answer their questions they visited bingham where mining is done by the mile instead instead of the foot they inspected the wonders of tintic gintic park city mercur beaver county alta american fork deep creek they were shown the great smelting smelling sm elting plants of the valley and at garfield they were told that mineral production in 1908 was something in excess of twenty seven million dollars and that for 1909 it would probably exceed thirty million they were shown the dividend record of mines over five millions paid thus far in 1909 and nearly eighty eight million to date and they were not slow to realize that the salt lake and the utah of today owe their existence to the mining industry another smelter victory an ail event of no common importance transpired last week when permission bermiss lon was granted by the federal court to the united states Sm smelling elting refining and mining company to operate its copper furnaces at the bingham junction plant marks the close of the war between the smelting smelling sm elting and farming interests in salt lake valley a struggle in which both sides appear to have won nearly two years ago an injunction on was granted to the fi farmers and the smelter was forced to close then the united states company got busy and within a year had evolved a system which proved most successful in solving the smoke question when applied to lead smelting smelling sm elting so well did this work out that the system has been perfected to meet the requirements for copper ores the outcome is in reality a victory for the smelt ing company over itself as the farmers have obtained the relief they sought and yet the smelters shelters sm elters may now operate unhindered the process has been patented by the united states people but it will probably be available to other smelting smelling sm elting inter ests who are confronted with the smoke problem bingham coppers but few people realize that copper has come into the first rank of metals and that the camp of bingham furnishes nearly all of the states copper production it is estimated that the yearly output from the bingham mines wal wll 11 approximate pounds which with a 12 cent market would be valued at almost not so bad for a camp just entering on its productive career the quarterly report of the utah copper company covering the months of april may and june shows some mighty interesting facts the foremost being that the net profit amounted to almost half a million dollars to be exact the cost per pound is being rapidly lowered beng be ng reduced during june at the garfield plant to cents alterations at the copperton hopperton Cop plant have just been completed which will bring the production cost more nearly equal with that of the garfield mill the report hints at further improvements which will mean thousands of dollars added to the net earnings for the next quarter so many consolidation rumors fill the street that one is bewildered with the hot air ef fusions of the scores of mining scribes it seems to be a guessing contest with no limit to the answers from any one entry some wise head has discovered that the bins at the international smelter in pine canyon are on a level with the portal of the mascotte mascotte tunnel and on this bases the assumption that the cole ryan people are planning to take over the boston consol dated and ohio copper perhaps the ohio copper and boston consolidated wish they would it certainly would be a good thing for both of them and on the right basis should be a good trick for the international interests with the fintics cs speaking of guessing contests T antic has one every few weeks which is of the hair raising stem winder kind will the sure thing mining company get the ore on the nth level some say that it will others that it will not in the meantime the stock cuts up more antles antics than a circus clown and the wires are kept hot with reports that the strike has been made and then denied just as often some time ago oro ore was encountered in the grand central on the 2000 level not being satisfied with this it was determined to look for the same shoot on the upper and lower levels either the ore shoot was not where it should have been or the niana m management ana gement delayed the news for a considerable sid erable time after it was found at any rate the public was kept guessing for a week or more and now comes the word that the rock has been disclosed on the 2100 level and is the biggest strike ever made in utah we hope it is but if it is it will have to go some the may day too has been doing things although not in such a spectacular fashion no great noise has been made because com mere mercal al ore was encountered on the 1000 level but this fact is destined to be of the utmost importance not only for the may day but for the other mines in that vicinity the usual depth for profitable operation in the fhe godiva humbug zone has been about feet but now the may day has demonstrated that pay values do exist at the lower levels the godiva has been doing considerable exploratory work around the 1000 foot mark and will now redouble its efforts to locate a pay shoot walter pitch fitch and associates have a most unusual scheme for mining under the town of eureka and judging from the big pro dubers within a stones throw from the city limits there should be a good chance of getting something down under the streets and houses of the town A novel plan has been hit upon to secure the privilege of mining under the town lots each person who grants the working rights for one acre of ground is given 1000 shares of stock in the company and the citizens are entering most heartily into the project operations will be started from the 1800 foot level of the chief consolidated shaft and no workings will be made within feet of the surface the park mines the big frog in the puddle at park just now seems to be the silver king consolidated the fourth fissure has been cut since july 23 and events are bunching up so fast that it would cause no surprise should a second parsons slope be discovered any day it is believed that the last discovery is near the lime quartzite contact and those who are familiar with park forma von ton are unanimous in the opinion that some great developments are near at hand the ore in all four fissures is a high grade product and is practically the first that the silver king con management has succeeded in finding it has been said that in park city ore belongs to the fellow who sees it first but it really belongs to the fellow who can get away with it the liberty mining company owning acres of promising ground southeast of the ontario possessions and adjoining the nail driver property is to be developed quite extensively ten this fall some of the largest operators in the district are behind the proposition and with such a likely estate and vigorous orous development this ought to open up into another big producer |
