Show Volume 1. SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, NOVEMBER, 1947 Number 2. T Governor Maw to Address Stevenson Banquet Westminster School Spirit Since 1913 ing the development of Westminster College since he became President in October, 1913: Most colleges grow slowly, but if they have a real reason for being they finally become strong through the support of those who believe them important. This has been the case with Westminster. When I became President in October, 1913, the school was at low ebb. Slowly, with interruptions caused by two world wars and a world depression it has gained headway. Some comparisons are as follows. Then the campus had 22 acres; there are 26 now. Then the only lawn was a small patch between Ferry Hall and the west campus road, with a very few trees and shrubs; now there are six or seven acres . of of lawn w:th shrubbery and , shade. Then Thirteenth East was a dirt road with an open irrigation ditch and willows fifteen feet high in front of the Presidents home, now it is a state highway with crowded traffic. Then there were Ferry and Converse Halls, the heating plant, the engineers house, and Gunton Memorial Chapel. We rebuilt the heating plant after a fire. We rebuilt the two top stories of Con-vrs- e Hall after a fire and turned the attic into science laboratories. We added a story to Ferry Hall. Then Foster Hall and Payne Gymnasium were built and we added an endowment of about $150,-00, pl-ert- at Cowboy-Lad- y Dance The coming season for one of The following article was written by Dr. Reherd, for the purpose of describ- - Foster Entertains 0. Americas favorite sports, basketball, is expected to bring many thrills and spills to The Parsons. We hope to emerge victorious, but fine men alone cannot complete the mission. The students of Westminster should plan now to support their team. We should show more interest in the game, know the players better and above all attend the games. Lets back up our team this year better than it has ever been be- . fore. W. B. With the confidence shown everywhere in the administration one can foresee a great advance for Westminster in the coming years. Alumni will have increasing reason to be proud of their Alma Mater. Friday, November 14th, is the red letter day when the main lounge of Foster Hall takes on the atmosphere of the Old West. There will be dancing, and entertainment for everyone during the evening. This dance wras inaugurated last year when Mrs. Atkinson suggested the theme and pointed out the possibilities of such a dance. Inspired by her advice, the fellows went to work. Their effort brought excellent results. The Cowboy and Lady dance was the talk of the campus long after the mellow strains of Stardust had faded away. It was a foregone conclusion that this dance would become an annual dormitory event. of Errors Comedy Li Wu", written in by Fairfax Proudfit be presented by the Nature is wonderful! Getting off to an early start this year, the members of Stevenson Memorial Society have planned a formal banquet to be. held at the Newhouse Hotel on December 4 at 7 p. m. oclock. Chief speaker for the occasion will be the Honorable Herbert B. Maw, Governor of the State of Utah. Lincoln Anderson will act as master cf ceremonies, with faculty responses to be given by Dr. Steele and Dean Boughton. John Erickson and Camille Gibson will give student responses. The dinner will be prefaced by dinner music which will feature a vocal solo by Ruth Wood, accompanied by Shirley Mertens. Stevenson Memorial Society was first founded in the spring of 1934, in memory of the late dean, Dr. P. L. Stevenson. Its purpose is that of stimulation of scholarship, and providing aid for deserving students. It has become through the years, a very TeafTidhor to be a member of Stevenson. Although any student is eligible to become a member, the fact that it requires very consistent good work is witnessed by the fact that only a limited number of students have received a pin given for three - consecutive-semest- er membership in the years since the organization of the Society. Newly elected officers, Lincoln Anderson, president; Jeanne p, vice president; Pedro Delgado, Secretary - treasurer; Ruth Wood, historian, and Dick Erickson, recorder, are to be congratulated both upon the fine Job they are doing in their posts, and upon, the election. Alice McGarrigle. La-thro- Where Is That School Song? In the last issue of this paper, a call was made for a new school song. We are still waiting for the results of that call.
