T h ere i s a p ercep t i o n t h a t i f w e a c c e p t c h a r i t y, w e a r e n o l o n g e r self-reliant. I disagree. The more self-reliant we are the easier it is to accept the kindness of others. I think we confuse selfreliance with pride. Pride is usually what stops us from accepting charity from others. But self-reliant people accept giving with open arms because they know the sacrifice of the g i v e r. We r e a l i z e t h a t t h e y a r e doing it out of love. Always accept the love of others. If for some reason they are not doing it out of love but for gratification, then let them obtain this reward. I ’ l l n e v e r f o rg e t t h e t i m e I w a s a t B a r b a r a H a l e ’s h o m e f o r d i n n e r. S i n c e s h e i s M o t h e r o f t h e Ye a r, I ’ l l m e n t i o n h e r f u l l n a m e . I asked her if I could help with the meal. She immediately put me to work. It felt so good to have her accept my willingness to help. Not that this was really charitable of me, instead a form of charity to my hostess. I’ve tried to practice this is my own home. Sometimes my children t h i n k i t ’s a w f u l t h a t I m a k e o u r g u e s t s h e l p . I a l w a y s a n s w e r, “ I f p e o p l e d o n ’t w a n t t o h e l p t h e y s h o u l d n ’t a s k , a n d i f t h e y w a n t to help they should be able to.” I think it was charitable of Barbara to let me help, teaching me a valuable lesson. I t ’s e a s i e r t o g i v e c h a r i t y t o others than to our family memb e r s , y e t i t ’s e a s i e r t o a c c e p t charity from family members than it is from others. I hope we can all learn to give and accept charity from both our families and others. Thanks Em for your words of wisdom. Any comments or questions w r i t e J a n e t H o f f m a n n , P. O .
