Show , NEW YORK AM) CALIFORNIA . The members of the California leg islature might read with profit the report of the work of Governor Miller Mil-ler of New York. The executive of the Empire state meant what he said when he promised a lower rate of taxation and some real reforms in the state government. We learn from this report that the cost of state government has been ac-I ac-I tuallv reduced more" than $11,000.- 000 below last year, and that over $3,000,000 has been cut from the pay roll. In practically every department depart-ment there has been a reduction in the number of employees, and some departments and commissions have been abolished altogether. What a difference when we turn to California. The cost of State government go-vernment here has increased from $47,000000 to S81.000.000. Instead of reducing the number of employees employ-ees the list is tO' be largely increased, and we are threatened with an. increase in-crease in the number of useless and overlapping commissions.. Of course all this increase comes out of the corporations and banks But the people will pay in the long run. since added burdens on the railroads, rail-roads, the electric companies and the banks will necessarily be reflected in higher charges to the people. |
