Show THE DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE SCHOLARSHIPS continued from page 7 some fields such as business cr medicine have a much greater chance of being able to donate money to a scholarship fund. There is something tangible the university can do, aside from giving more money to general to scholarship funds. Some scholarships can be moved from academic general scholarships b?ck to departmental scholarships ir. Drder to ensure the equal distribution of money across academic fields. Another tangible action the U. can take is to change the GFA necessary for retention of a scholarship from 3.7 to 3.5, a number which would be consistent with the rest of the universities in Utah. The survey noted that many students actually JANUARY MONDAY. left the university because they lost scholarships due to low CPAs. It is a shame to lose students who were intelligent enough to get a scholarship m the first place just because they got a 3.6 or 3.5 GPA one year. Unfortunately, rather thati allotting the leftover money to someone else, lost scholarships simply go back into the general fund. No one benefits from the high GPA necessary for a student to keep a scholar- ship. Ideally, more funding would be available for scholarships and grants in general. But the university is not exactly spilling over with excess money. Outside donations are wonderful, but scarce, particularly within certain fields of study. The university should work with what it has to provide the greatest opportunity for the most diverse population it can. 1Qf 2000 9 OHMONated?
