Show May 15 03.qxd 12/7/2021 4:02 PM Page 12 THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 12 Volume VIII Issue III May 15, 2003 DYER’S WOAD cont. from page 1 must be sealed and returned between June 2 through June 4 from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. The county is looking for youth between the ages of 4 and 16 to fill the bags with the weed and two inches of its root. Each youth can receive up to two bags and return the filled bags for $10 a piece. Weber County youth will receive payment at the 10:00 a.m. Weber County Commission meeting being held on June 10. Dyer’s woad usually grows between one to four feet tall. It is a plant native to south- easter Russia. Around 1910, alfalfa seed contaminated with dyer’s woad seed was imported from Ireland and introduced to Utah near Brigham City. County residents are being asked to control the weed. You must pull the taproot out, and prevent plants from going to seed. On average, it takes about seven years of eliminating the plant from an infested area, as the seed can lie dormant in the soil for many years. Landowners can also spray for the weed. For more information, contact the Utah State Extension office at 399-8200, or the County Weed Department at 399-8356. Pull it, Spray it, Cut it, But, PLEASE, don’t let it continue to spread! Why? It’s an invader, not native. You have neighbors and friends. We all have landscapes. The Valley is beautiful with its natural flora. Dyers Woad is one of Utah’s most wanted noxious weeds. It’s unlawful to allow it to grow out of control. Without your help, it will continue to spread… Each flower produces 100’s of seeds. The tap root robs the soil of water and nutrients, and sends natural flora – and your landscape – into submission. Once the seeds have turned brown to black, they are ripe and ready to fall or blow into the wind to another location.
