Show Thursday. August 30, 2007 OREM TIMES sfortsribc T'Wolves Hunter for Russ Lyman NORTH COUNTY It won't show up as a sack on anyone's stat sheet. It won't be counted as a turnover. It won't go down as another tackle for a dominant defensive lineman. In fact, on paper it was merely an incomplete pass. However, the play David Kruger made at the start of the second half in Timpanogos' 34-7 34-7 win over Hunter was one of the main reasons the T'Wolves were able to blow out the Wolverines on Friday night in West Valley City. With Timpanogos clinging to a 14-7 lead early in the second half, Kruger came around the left end virtually untouched and laid into Hunter quarterback A.J. Tueinau. Tueinau went down in a heap as the ball rolled . backwards. Although the play was ruled an incomplete pass, it signaled the beginning of the end for the Wolverines as the inspired T'Wolves went on to dominate the second half. "Our defense rallies behind Kruger," said Timpanogos quarterback Christian Stewart. "When he starts playing well, everyone gets pumped up." Two plays after Kruger's huge hit, Timpanogos got the ball back on a punt. Two plays after that, running back Taylor Lyons broke a 58-yard run down the left sideline to set up Christian Stewart's 3-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Schade. On the next set of downs, T'Wolf corner Kellen Mc-Whorter Mc-Whorter intercepted a pass and returned it to the Hunter 15-yard line to set up Stewart's touchdown pass to Grant Jimenez Ji-menez which gave Timpanogos a 28-7 lead in the third quarter. "That's what we talked about at halftime was that we had to finish this game and not do what we did last week," said Timpanogos coach Brad Molen. "Our defense stepped up and our offense continued to play well." Although the T'Wolves finished fin-ished very strong, early on it looked like it might be another disappointing week. On the Wolverines' second play of the game, running back Muka Atiga broke off a 90-yard run to make it a 7-0 game. "I thought, 'Oh no, here we go again,' " Molen said. "But we bounced back pretty good." That's an understatement considering his team scored the game's final 34 points. Timpanogos tied it up in the first quarter when Stewart and Ben Laidler connected on a beautiful 12-yard throw-and-catch in the corner of the end zone. Taylor Lyons made it 14-7 on his 13-yard run in the second quarter. Lyons, who finished with 187 yards rushing, added a second score with a 35-yard scamper in the fourth quarter. Stewart inished with 243 yards through the air and three touchdowns. Jimenez finished with his second straight 100-yard 100-yard receiving game, finishing with 104 yards on six catches. "I really think we have one of the most complete teams out there," Stewart said. "We just get rolling and once we get rolling we're hard to stop." i Nice f of Stewart and the T'Wolves was getting their first win of the year to improve to 1-1. Cross Country The American Fork Grass Relays, Re-lays, held Saturday, are no ordinary ordi-nary cross country races.Instead of a team running together, as is the case in most cross country events, the Relays have five runners run-ners from each team take turns circling a two-mile course. The format may be different but the usual suspects still managed man-aged to come out on top as Davis Da-vis and Timpanogos finished 1-2 in the girls varsity race, while Timpview and Springville took the top two spots for the boys. "This is mostly about mental toughness," said Timberwolf head coach Jody Nelson. "It's not a team race in the same way as the other races." Timpanogos had a couple of juniors turn in its fastest times on the day, finishing their legs of the relay only four seconds apart. "I was really tired but my teammates were cheering me on the whole way," said Timber-wolf Timber-wolf Brooke Hodson, who finished fin-ished first individually 12:32. "I thought there was no way (that I would come in first) but I was lucky. It was hard but fun." Teammate Suzie Sorenson ended up fourth in 12:36. The team has senior stars in a variety of positions including in-cluding keeper Aly Tucker, defender Brianne Larsen, midfielder mid-fielder Kaitlyn Thomas, and forwards Anne Shallenberger and Jaime Lyons. SPRINGVILLE (3-0-0, 6-1-0) The Red Devils lost a number num-ber of talented players to graduation from last season, so surely they'll be rebuilding, right? Not a chance. "I've got a lot to be optimistic optimis-tic about," said Springville head coach Ryan Swanson. "We have a lot of players that I think are really going to be able to help the team. We still have some work to do but we're excited about the season." Talented senior keeper Sarah Clement is one of the best keepers in the Valley and Natalie Young and Rachel Fischer have proven they can put the ball in the net. Tx)ele is an unknown quantity quan-tity for many of the teams in the league, since few have played the Buffalos recently. They have some talented young athletes that will make them a team to watch out for in the next couple of years.
