Show Old system burned out $200000 fire system bj Gina Howard staff writer Pulling fuealarms in college dorms has always been a typical prank However in CElTs Sessions Honor Hall pulling a fire alarm is only an exercise in futulity Because almost 8ft student's lives are in jeopardy a petition was passed around the dorm to make College of Eastern Utah's administration aware of the problem Copies of the petition were given to Housing Director Joe Glorioso Development Dean Karen Miller and CEU President Michael Peterson Tuesday CEUs Physical Department head Gene Carlson said CEU is redoing and up- grading the fire alarm systems throughout campus to bring the hod into compliance with the minimum requirements of the state fire codes Work on the project is scheduled to begin within about a week starting in Sessions Honor HaU Bright Light Alarm Control Company of Salt City is handling the job The company received the contract with a bid of $157408 at an open bidding Nov 10 in Salt ' campus Lake ’fiiccontract will be ofli dally awarded sometime this week Carlson said however that the project was already in progress when the petition was started and would have been completed without it The petition did have an effect for the simple reason that Sessions lacked exit signs and escape charts Carlson said that those will be posted and that he is working with the Price City fire chief to sponsor fire drills for the dorms The project originally in started March 1988 but the bids were too high for the S137J000 funds hte Utah Department of Public Safety had allotcd for CUE The state raised the total amount of funds to $200000 and the project was rc-bid Carlson said — PubllshedbytlwstiJde wen KMiiiinnaPir nmnsfiEfi flEMnii?En nf? fEE$ fihretffnap d&fclii Board of Regents ask for 7 to 9 89 for 90 tuition increase percent increase in state appropriations and unfair" University students If you plan to attend college next year you better work extra hours next summer because students may have to pay seven to nine percent higher tuition at the state's nine public colleges and universities in the 1989 academic year This increase was passed by the state's Board of Regents November 11 meeting in StJt Lake City and must be approved by Legislators during their annual meetings in January and February College of Eastern Utah will have the smallest increase with an additional $48 added to its tuition costs and the University of Utah will post the largest increase with $122 added to its tuition costs The Regents approved a seven percent tuition hike at the state's two year college and a nine percent increase at the state's larger schools effective summer quarter 1989 This makes next year's tuition costs for a - not counting fees - at the U of U at $1450 at Utah State University $1095 Weber State $1000 Salt Lake Community College $970 Southern Utah State College $950 Utah Valley Community College $920 Dixie $880 CEU $750 and Snow one-sid- already arc paying eight percent tuition this year Yet lawmakers increased state appro- priations for college and universi- ties by only 086 percent this school year say student leaders Last year tuition at the state's colleges and universities was increased eight percent to 10 percent while state appropriations for higher education increased by only 005 percent Similarly the state increased appropriations in 1986 by only 315 percent for tuition higher education while shot up six percent The U of U's student Vice Resident Grant Sperry body felt that the Regents are pricing students right out of an education "Utah is turning itself into a Third World country with an elitist class and an uneducated populace" The Regents counter attacked by referring to a study that shows Utah's university students pay less tuition than do students at comparable institutions Students schools attending Utah's two-yea- r however pay slightly more than cnl $740 In a Salt Lake Tribune article concerning the tuition hike the U of U student body president expressed anger at the Regents approving the increase "We don't feel that the state is doing its part Utah is passing all the increases to the students without corresponding ed The lucky ones turn yellow and red and brigthen the world for all Other ones don! plan ahead and stay the same through the fal The kicky ones go away for the winter staying safe til the spring Other ones get cold and splnter braving the cold and song Ja k Shewmake (Photo by C Hamaker) students attending peer instiui-It'- s lions They said that U of U students pay about $1540 in tion and fees while the average tuition at comparable schools is $1820 Weber State College's tuition and fees total about $1100 while the tuition charged at compa- table schools is about $1310 The biggest difference is shown at SLCC where tuition and fees arc $1077 while tuition at comparable schools is $857 The student leaders fell that they cannot support the increase unless the Regents fight for a corresponding increase in tui-mo- 1 re state appropriations The U of U students have seen university programs drop from the nation's top 10 schools to the middle 50s said Brian Robertson a U of U student leader "Students will pay if tuition increases are tied to state appropriations" he said "If you believe all the data that's been put out (on low faculty salaries and declining libraries) you'd fight for more money" This is not likely to happen if the past legislative |
