Show Volume XIV Issue XV The Ogden Valley news Page 11 May 15, 2007 Weber County Housing Authority Grants Available The Weber County Housing Authority is now accepting applications for owner-occupied home rehabilitation grants for areas in Weber County outside of Ogden City. The applicant must qualify under the State’s low/moderate income guidelines based upon family size. Emergency repairs such as roofing, plumbing, electrical, and heating needs are the principle rehabilitation efforts. There are a limited number of grants available (max. $5,000 ea.), and funds will be administered on a first come, first served basis upon qualification. Eden Group Part of Global Movement The Knit for Kids program has grown into a global movement after a Guideposts editor’s heartfelt reminiscence about her childhood. So far 400,000 sweaters have been donated to children in need all over the world. Ten years ago in March, 1996, when the story about knitting Africa, and disaster stricken areas, boxes of these sweaters, knitted with lots of love by women across America, went with them to be left at orphanages and with other children in need of some warm comfort. The Knitwits from the Ogden New Interior Designer Opens Business in Ogden Valley By Shanna Francis Ogden Valley News Eden resident and designer Galina Nielsen recently opened up an Ogden Valley office of her business European Design. Nielsen specializes in interior design. She worked as a designer three years in Park City before moving to Ogden Valley. Formerly of Europe, Galina initially came to Utah when her son Stepan Georgev who competed in the 2002 Olympics at Snowbasin where he ranked 16th in the combined Downhill, Super G, and Slalom races. “The Olympics brought me to Utah. I love it here; the Valley is very special to me,” Nielsen commented. Galina states, “Let me bring joy to your day by taking care of your unfinished design projects—matching colors, fabrics, and paint; selecting furnishings and accent pieces; or creating custom floral arrangements. I am also available as a consultant to help with your next dinner party. Scoping Comments being Solicited for National Wild, Scenic, and Recreational River Areas The Forest Service, in cooperation with the State of Utah, will prepare a draft and final legislative environmental impact statement (LEIS) to complete the process for giving consideration to potential national wild, scenic, and recreational river areas on the National Forests in Utah under the Wild Scenic Rivers Act. Portions of those National Forests extend into Colorado and Wyoming, and those areas will be included in the study. Hundreds of women requested patterns, while those who couldn’t knit donated yarn or sent contributions to help fund the project. Not long after, hundreds of handmade sweaters in bright colors (kids love bright colors) started to pour in and boxes began to stack up at the Guideposts home office in NY. Whenever medical relief teams and other humanitarian organizations left the U.S. for far off countries like Russia, Valley, who meets every first and third Wednesday night at Alpine Pizza in Eden, have sent a total of 165 sweaters to the Knit for Kids Program since the group was formed four years ago by Drienie Hattingh. The Knitwits are off to a very good start for 2007! They are about to send off another box of 14 colorful sweaters to Carmel, New York. They are hoping to send a record number of sweaters off for the group before the end of the year. Anyone interested in joining the Knitwits can call Drienie at 745-3635. The purpose of the LEIS is to determine which eligible river segments are suitable for inclusion in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. Scoping comments are due June 30, 2007.
