Show Schools Thursday, October 4, 2007 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Mrs. Hatch’s third grade authors by KIERSTEN HATCH GVES Teacher Third Grade student’s participate in Writer’s Workshop. Writer’s workshop is a way for student’s to learn about the fundamentals of writing from the beginning prewriting stages to the final publication stages. They have worked really hard at revising and editing their stories. They have participated in author circles where they share their stories with each other and then revise and edit. They go through many stages before they reach that final publication. I am really proud of how well the student’s are writing in the first month of school. I hope you enjoy a few of the student’s published work. Hunting with my Dad by Gage Mogle I went antelope hunting and it was fun. It was cool. We played and it was fun. During the month of October, we start testing in various classes. The Utah Basic Skills Certification Test (UBSCT) will be given to the juniors and seniors who have not taken the test before or who have not passed all parts of the test. This test will be given October 16th, 17th, and 18th. The 16th will be the writing test, the 17th will be the math test and the 18th will be the reading test. The test will be given again in February for sophomores. This is the test required for all students to pass to get a high school diploma. Also during October, we give the PSAT/NMSQT (pre SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) This test is given to the top 10% of the junior class. Students do not have to take this test but if they take it and score high many scholarships are available to them. The third test given is the PLAN test. This is a Pre-ACT. It helps students see where they are academically and gives them an idea of the kinds of questions on the ACT. The colleges require ACT scores for admissions and now colleges are requiring specific ACT scores for students to take concurrent enrollment classes. In the past juniors have taken the ACT, now many sophomores need ACT scores to take College Trig and/or College Algebra during their junior year. The next ACT test will be given of October 27th. Students already need to be registered to take the test at this time. The follow ACT test will be given on December 8th, 2007. Registration forms will need to be mailed by November 2nd, to take this test. The Senior class had the opportunity to meet with representatives from all the colleges and universities in the state. We met with Manti High School last week to hear information about the opportunities available at each school. Students were told about the different kinds of financial aid and how to apply for each. They were given deadlines of when admissions applications and scholarships forms are due at each college. The students were excited about the information they received and the contacts they made. The Peer to Peer column features one local youth each month who exemplifies leadership qualities in overcoming the negative peer pressure so common in our world today. September’s Peer to Peer is Tyree Christenson. Tyree was born in Gunnison and has lived here her entire life. Tyree is currently a junior at Gunnison Valley High School. She is a cheerleader and has participated in speech. She enjoys camping, 4wheeling, reading the book Twilight, riding horses, hanging out with her friends and family, and talking on her cell phone. She plans on going to Snow College, getting married in the temple, and becoming either an orthodontist or an elementary school teacher. Tyree is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in. She doesn’t care what people think about her, when she is standing up for what is right. She says, “Good things happen to those who do good and bad things happen to those who do bad. I choose to do good. Things hap- Tyree Christenson pen every day, but it is your attitude and how you react to those situations that will determine the outcome.” I asked Tyree what she felt like teens struggle with most today. She answered, “Teens today are followers, not leaders. We need more leaders who will stand up for what they know to be right. Its time we started lifting others up instead of dragging them down.” Tyree is the daughter of Mark and Kimberly Christenson of Centerfield.
