Show Page 4 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Thursday, October 4, 2007 Marriage Mechanics Need A Tune-Up? Give More Attention To Your Relationships Than Your Vehicle! Peppermint Place Fall has officially arrived, on the calendar, as well as on the barometer. With the onset of cooler weather, everybody’s thoughts start moving toward the upcoming holidays. One of my favorite things about the holidays is the treats that go with them. Halloween is the best time for candy. Halloween candy is on sale in every store. But if you’re looking for something a little different, the Peppermint Place at 188 North Main in Alpine offers a huge selection of unique candies for every holiday. They also sell gift items for kids, for holidays, even for weddings and other special occasions. As of last April the Peppermint Place store broke off from the manufacturing facility, and became its own individual store. Up until then, the store was part of the factory, where you could go in and actually watch the candymaking process. The factory is around 90,000 square feet, and includes the candy-making rooms, and a room where “artists” decorate each piece so that each of the candy pieces have come to be called “collector’s items.” There is also a temperature-controlled warehouse for storing the packaged candy until it is sold or shipped out to other distributors. They make specialized candies for Christmas, Hanukkah, Valentines Day, St. Patrick’s Day, My marriage is like my car because: also have Lollipals which are big suckers decorated with faces. For Halloween they feature things like skeletons and vampires. They also have Puppet Pals, which are big candy figurines set on top of a flavored, striped candy stick. But that’s not all they carry. They have Circus Sticks in 35 different flavors, Twistix, Twistpops, Kookie Kakes, and many, many other kinds of candy. The Peppermint Place boasts that they have the best tasting candies available. All of their candy making process is broken down into an absolute science to create the best treats out there. They start with heating the ingredients in the kettle, and when it’s just right, they pour it out onto hot steel tables where it is separated into portions. Here they add flavor and color, and then cover it with a striped outer layer, and send it through a machine that stretches, pulls and cuts it into individual pieces. Then the candy pieces ride the conveyor belt while they cool, and off they go to the packaging area to be shipped off and sold. So if you just can’t wait until Halloween to start tasting candy, The Peppermint Place is a fun outing that provides chance to try some new, delicious candy, and to admire the finely, hand-crafted candies that are still produced piece by piece at the factory. Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Independence Day, as well as for other special occasions such as birthdays, Bar Mitzvahs, new babies or weddings. Even though it’s called the Peppermint Place, which is somewhat reminiscent of Christmas, it was actually Easter candy that started it all. It actually began as a small creative venture in the home of Ken and Marlene Matheson in 1969. They created edible “panoramic Easter eggs,” which they decorated with icing. The eggs were so well received by their neighbors and friends that they started getting orders from people all over northern Utah. Five years later they had already gained national recognition at a tradeshow in Chicago, and by then the business had definitely outgrown their home. They moved into a facility in Alpine, and while it’s grown and changed to accommodate their growing product base. In 1994 a privately held candy company purchased the business, and from there their market spread to an international level, including Europe, Mexico and Asia. Some of their candy that would be fun for Halloween are their Bubblegum Buddies, which are small figurines made of bubblegum. They have witches, Frankensteins, black cats, trick-ortreaters, ghosts and many other characters to choose from. They Quote of the week! (This is where you send in your favorite relationship quotes that you have on your refrigerator or anywhere else!) is sponsored by: Shanelle Winn “Insanity is doing the same old thing and expecting a different result” If you don’t pay attention to that little noise in your engine it might lead to a major breakdown and be very costly!! So let’s do something different— something that works! Send in your own reasons why your marriage, children, parents, etc. are like your car! Tools for Successful Relationships Hi, my name is Greg Dunford. Besides being a Seminary teacher for the past 20 years, I also had a successful counseling practice in Arizona for 10 years. I Love teaching and sharing tools that have helped myself, my family and countless others that I have worked with. I wanted to continue teaching these principles and wondered what would be the best method to reach the most people in a fun, interactive way. As I was getting my car tuned-up, the idea of “Marriage Mechanics” came to my head. I thought of how important it is to listen to the little bothersome noises in our vehicles (or relationships) before they turns into major mechanical breakdowns. If you are like me, you wait until the last minute or until the car falls apart before you bring it in to get fixed. My purpose in sharing this weekly article is so that we never get to the point in our relationships where we breakdown and feel like there is no hope. There is hope. Send in your questions, and your thoughts and quotes on what has worked for you in your relationships and together, hopefully , we won’t have any major breakdowns. And guys— don’t think “oh good they are going to fix my wife”—I called it mechanics for a reason! Have you ever told your wife “the universal joint needs fixing” and she says “the what?! I don’t care, just get it fixed! “ Has your wife ever remarked that the relationship needs fixing—communication break- RESPONSE TO QUESTIONS: down, conflicts over finances, kids; emotional breakdown—and you say “the what?! I don’t care, just get it fixed!“ Please don’t make this a “His” or “Her” problem. One of the rules of this weekly article is that it cannot be used to try to “Fix” somebody else. It is each reader’s opportunity to individually apply these principles to him/herself. It is only by changing ourselves that we can have the power of positive influence on others!! We will discuss this “power” (that we can all have) in more depth in future articles. I hope to make this as simple and painless as possible! I’m going to be here every week sharing tools, and answering questions. This is your article as much as mine, so let’s work together to strengthen our relationships! And remember—this is supposed to be fun! If we’re not having fun, we’re doing something wrong! Send in questions, comments, thoughts, quotes and jokes (appropriate, please!) to my p.o. box, or email below. I’ll do my best to include all I can each week! And we want to get the whole family involved—anyone & everyone—all ages—are welcome to participate. If you want my wife or kids to respond to your question, please specify! They would each love to respond and be involved in this ongoing project! Thanks in advance for your participation— that’s what will make this article valuable to everyone! (starting next week, this area will have answers to questions sent inpreviously) Tool of the Week: (this area is for something practical we can all do each week to improve our relationships. It starts with the heart, then DOING is the key!) Each time your loved ones (esp. spouse) come through the door, pretend that it’s Christmas morning and they are the most wonderful and precious gift you’ve ever received. Run up and give them a big hug & a kiss; tell them how much you love them, and ask how their day is going. Actually listen to what they say—notice the difference something so simple can make!...and pass it on!! Mail, e-mail or call in comments, tips & questions to be published weekly. All will be anonymous unless otherwise specified. marriagemechanics@yahoo 85 East Center Street, Gunnison 528-7161 Marriage Mechanics P.O. Box 935 Gunnison UT, 84634 Relationship Problems?
