Show HOW MUCH HAY SHRINKS-So many things have to be taken into consideration in calculating the weight of hay in bulk it makes it difficult to get at it precisely. For example, fine, new-mown hay, like red top or herd grass, would probably require 500 cubic feet for the ton; timothy, 550, clover 650, coarse meadow boy, 700 or more. After being stacked thirty days the bulk would be decreased from five to ten per cent. possibly more, according to the size of the stack and the pressure upon it. Again, hay will vary somewhat in measurement according to the time it is cut. If this be done when it is just coming into blossom, as it always should, it will pack closer and weigh more per cubic foot than if left till the seed begins to ripen, and the stalks and leaves have grown coarser and become drier. Good judgment and some experience in measuring and weighing is required to get at this correctly. A neighbor of mine informed me that he once had the curiosity to weigh his timothy hay as he put it into the barn in July. He sold it about nine months after and on reweighing it as it came out of the barn, he found greatly to his surprise that it had shrunk to within a fraction of twenty five per cent.- M. B. Allen. AMERICAN women doctors can have a fair field and plenty of favor if they choose to go as far as Hindustan for them. The higher caste women of India are not permitted the attentions of male physicians when ill and are obliged to depend upon the ministrations of wretched old hags of their own race who cure by charms and conjurations. A pathetic story comes to us from England. A Miss Denby, a missionary from that country with some medical knowledge, was fortunately able to cure the wife of the Rajah of ?? of a dangerous disease. When she was about to return to England the Ranee sent for her and confided to her a piteous message to the Queen, which was written and hidden in a locket, explaining to her how cruel were the sufferings of the women in Indian ??, and imploring her to send over woman doctors to their aid. The Queen received the message and promised to do something for their aid, but we suspect it is from the shrewd American lady doctors that aid will first come.-Church Union. |
