Show Thursday, June 15, 2006 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Page 8 DCFS holds training meeting on Shaken Baby Syndrome ByMARKHENLINE On Monday June 12th, the Division of Child and Family Services held a day long training meeting on the Basics of Investigation of Child Abuse and Neglect. The meeting was held in the new Manti City Building confei'ence room. The staff of DCFS were in attendance along with representatives of the law enforcement agencies throughout the Sanpete county including Gunnison Police Chief Blane Jensen. The Sanpete County attorneys office was also asked to participate in the meeting but no representative was in attendance. The training was presented by Mr. Robert N. Parish, JD, managing attorney, Second District office of the Guardian ad Litem, Mr. Parrish began his legal career with the Utah Attorney General's office in 1980. He became a prosecutor in 1983 and began specializing in child abuse prosecution in the late 1980's. Mr. Parish has worked on both child protection cases and criminal cases involving proof of child abuse issues. Parish has become a nationally recognized expert in proving cases of serious physical abuse and homicide of children, and has presented training all over the country and written numerous books and articles on that topic. In 2000, Parish was appointed as Deputy Director This week's summer reading program at the library continued with the theme of "Helper Animals". Miss Gunnison, Heather Naylor and 1st Attendant, JuliAnn Sellers were there to read to the 85 children in attendance and help out with the activities. In this capacity, Parish has consulted on hundreds of cases all over the world, authored a training curriculum for law enforcement and CPS investigators and wrote chapters in several upcoming medical and legal books. Parish's latest book title "Abusive Head Trauma in Infants and Young Children" is due to be released in late 2006. During the training, Parish discussed the basis of investigation of child abuse and neglect. He pointed out the importance of joint investigations between law enforcement and DCFS. He also gave information about dealing with victims and perpetrators, and recogniz- ing the dynamics of abuse. Parrish spent most of the day however discussing serious physical abuse of children. With injuries ranging from bruises and burns to shaking baby syndrome and fractures. Parrish brought along a power point presentation which included several clips of adults caught physically abusing children. He also demonstrated on a rag doll, the brutal and violent acts that cause shaken baby syndrome. Parrish discussed actual cases that he has helped prosecute or that he has been involved with.
