S church concerning the he churchs church's security program delivered delivered de- de livered at the opening session of the semiannual conference Friday by y President Heber J. J Grant As promised at the last April conference con- con ference we inaugurated we-inaugurated a church security plan I To facilitate the putting putting put put- ting into effect of the plan we organized organized organized or or- a general committee whose I functions were to to- represent the presiding presiding presiding pre pre- siding bishopric in the detailed administrative administrative administrative ad ad- work of coordinating and supervising the he labors of the various regularly established church organizations in their large and important important important im im- im- im security operations The security plan contemplated no new church machinery for this 1 work but provided for the use of all the existing church organizations the the stake and ward organizations the priesthood quorums the Relief society and the various auxiliary ry organizations or or- each of which to cach ach was render the maximum service it could furnish in the interest of the general welfare of ot the church Objective Set The announced objective set for forthe forthe forthe the church under this program was to provide by October 1 1936 by a wholly voluntary system of gifts jn In n cash or in kind sufficient food fuel tuel clothing and bedding to supply through the coming winter every needy and worthy church family Unable unable unable un un- able to furnish these for itself in order that no member of the church should suffer in these times of stress and emergency Our primary purpose was to set setup setup setup up in so far as it might be possible a system under which the c curse of idleness would be done away with the evils evIl of a a. dole abolished and independence industry thrift and self r respect be once more established established established among our people The aim of the church is to help the people to help themselves Work is to be re- re enthroned as the ruling principle of ot the lives of our church membership Our great leader Brigham Young under similar conditions said Set the poor to work work settIng setting out orchards splitting rails rail digging ditches making fences fences- or anything useful useful and and so enable them to buy mealand flour and l the necessities o of life Timely Today This admonition is as timely today as when Brigham Young made it The harvests not having been yet fully completed it is not riot possible to tom tomake tomake m make ke a final report upon our present present present pres pres- ent situation n under the he plan but we weare weare weare are happy to make malte the following preliminary statement In accordance with the plan everything that has been done has been accomplished by the purely voluntary gift or labor of members of the church as well as the gifts of many nonmembers who have contributed contributed contributed con con- most generously of their substance to aid the church in its efforts We wish especially to thank those for their help More than persons have performed labor on various stake and ward projects in connection with this plan Many of these have contributed their work gratis othera others others oth oth- ers era have received for their services work certificates entitling them to help during the coming corning winter Hundreds of thousands thousand of work hours have been furnished by the people to this necessary and praiseworthy continue on these projects making sure sur su to give a full a days day's work for value received but they are expected to contribute of their time wh when n not so employed to the carrying put out of has heretofore cared The exact nu number ber of such persons cannot now v be certainly given but they hey may be as many as We have lave strongest reasons for believing believing believing ing we shall be able to give these the aid they need At 10 p. p m. m October 1 the date set on which reports were to be made 98 stakes out of a total of had reported on their organizations organizations and achievements and 83 answer that they are prepared to supply food clothing bedding etc to every person in need Commend Presidencies We commend the presidencies of stakes and bishoprics of wards for this outstanding record of promptness prompts prompt prompt- ness s and efficiency t It is also contemplated that under under under un un- un- un der this plan work shall be sought and obtained for the unemployed in private industries thus relieving both the government and the church To this time upward of persons have been so placed by the security agencies Efforts along this line will be steadily pur pur- sued As already stated th the harvests are not yet completed and so re returns returns returns re- re turns are necessarily incomplete but data available show as to foodstuffs foodstuffs food food- stuffs stutts actually now on on hand the following items Wheat over bushels Beans over pounds Dried fruits over pounds Meat over pounds Vegetables over pounds Potatoes over bushels Shelled corn over pounds Flour over pounds Canned fruit and almost cans There are numbers of other items of foodstuffs of oj lesser amounts There Ther her are over articles articles' of me men's mens s 's women's and childrens children's clothing clothing cloth cloth- ing including dresses underwear coats suits stockings socks and nd shoes There are more than 2000 quilts already made and other bedding is being accumulated in InC C substantial q quantities Arrangements are under way for forthe forthe forthe the supply of fuel as needed The foregoing partial summary will indicate what the people have done in the short space of time of five months only It is a glowing promise of what the people are able to do when they put their wills and hearts to this work To Face Necessity Every ward and stake is expected to face the necessity not only of i providing for its own but of helping helping help help- ing o oth other th r wards and stakes In Jn no other way w would it be
