Jim Winfield, a middle school 6th grader, and Heidi Webb, a student at Southeast Elementary, emerged as Grand County School District's top spellers in the Deseret News Spelling Bee held Tuesday night at Star Hall. Heidi, who was tripped up on the word "mawkish" (sickly sentimental), conceded the match to Jim. Both spellers will compete at the state meet in Salt Lake City, April 14, 6 p.m., at Clayton Intermediate. State winners will go on to a national spelling bee to be held in Washington, D.C. |
