' ' Gutter Talk is a monthly column intended to educate and - h j( ' f j- - ; ' 'r I r f t f ' 1 a jr i ' inform Base personnel and families regarding stormwater and the environment. tJ Did you know that dumping one quart of motor oil down a storm drain contaminates 250,000 gallons of water? Most people dont realize that emptying oil and other pollutants into a gutter or storm drain contributes to water pollution. Unlike the sanitary sewer system, which uses advanced processes to clean the water, the storm drain system involves no treatment but drains directly to ponds and creeks. The contaminated stormwater can ruin recreation areas and harm wildlife, fisheries and, potentially, people. The storm drain system at Hill Air Force Base is intended to only collect runoff from storms. Anything other than clean water should not be put into storm drains. It is illegal to dump many substances, including oil, into the storm drain system. Other substances, such as yard refuse and detergents from car washing, although not illegal, can degrade v '' V , ' 1 Sri- r' water quality. During the upcoming months, no dumping markers will be placed near storm drain grates and other open collection areas around the Base. These markers are intended to be a reminder to not dump anything into the storm drain system. Heed the message on these markers and help keep our water clean.
