Dorcas Adams, an ASSUSC senator, was presented with the prestigious Sterling Silver award by Thunderbird Awards Kelly Holman, (left). The award is presented each year to the top female in terms of service to the student body. Former ASSUSC President Alan Bailey, (above) was named the recipient of the Ken Benson Award, symbolic of the most significant service by a male student. COFFEE Former ASSUSC President Alan Bailey and Sen. Dorcas Adams were the top award winners among a select group of students, faculty, staff and alumni honored at the college's annual Thunderbird Awards Night Thursday. Bailey, a senior from Escalante, received the prestigious R. Kenneth Benson Award. Named in honor of Benson, retired director of student activities, the annual award is made to the outstanding male student. ASSUSC senator representing Adams, a second-terthe school of arts and letters, was honored as the outstanding female student With the Sterling Silver Award. KALL radio announcer Danny Kramer served as master of ceremonies for the awards evening. The one award selected in advance, Alumna of the Year, went to RaNae Naegle Morris, a 1947 graduate. Morris, now retired and living in Los Osos, Calif., is the founder of Utah Craft and Floral, which will soon expand to include a sixth store and employs 70 people. awards went to Lewis Kim Jones for Other Teacher of the Year and to William Brad Bennett as the President's Award Recipient. Jones, an associate professor of mathematics, joined the SUSC faculty in 1961. Jones' award is based on popular student vote. Bennett joined the SUSC staff in 1984 as director of student activities. His award is presented by the former student body president, in this case Bailey, for his outstanding help to student concerns. Juan Henderson, a senior majoring in physical science, was honored as Personality of the Year, another award m non-stude- nt QUICK, WHERE WERE YOU ON OCT. 25, 1986? NEED AN ANSWER? SEE PAGES 8, 9 & 10. based on a student popularity vote. Henderson is a leading rusher for the Thunderbird football team and the current Mr. SUSC. Margie Taylor, the 1987 SUSC valedictorian, was named Scholar of the Year. A member of Alpha Chi honor society and PBL, Taylor will graduate with a degree in business administration. Keith Betsuie and Kathy Shammo were honored as Male and Female Contributes of the Year. Betsuie, a social science major, is the president of the SUSC Inter-TribClub and recently began work as ASSUSC clubs and organizations coordinator. Shammo, an elementary education major, was ASSUSC's activities director and ir the of Thunderbird Awards Night. Christensen was honored as Entertainer of the Doug Year. A senior theatre arts major, Christensen has appeared in numerous SUSC theatre productions and has earned numerous awards for his original play, Sander. Club was named Organization of SUSC's Inter-Tribthe Year for its involvement with the Western Royale,' activities held in conjunction with the recent USAUSSR Gymnastics Goodwill Tour. Other activities sponsored by the club include Native American Week, Native American basketball tournaments and the Miss SUSC Inter-TribPrincess Pageant. SUSC President Gerald R. Sherratt received a special award from Bailey, who praised the college president for his devoted service to SUSC, his faith in its continued growth and development, and his efforts on behalf of the students, including construction of the Centrum and the new student center. al co-cha- al al |
