New,“ \\\\\ \\‘~‘ // x;,” 0, v,’ . \\\\\\\\\~ —— \' &\§\\\;‘\t THE CEPHALOPOD OF THE GREAT BASINs—Gmus Polypl Mormon! Priesthood". Victor Hugo, in his Toilers of the Sea, gives a wonderfully vivid description of the Cephalopod, otherwise known as the Devil Fish, one of the most horrible and repulsive sea monsters. As many of our readers have no idea of this animal, we give Dana’s description of it: “ In natural history a molluscous animal characterized by a distind head surrounded by a circle of long arms by which it 02-11st and seizes objects. The name Cephalopod alludes to the fact that the feet or arms are arranged about the head or appear to proceed from it.” It need only be added that the extremities and sides are provided with a number of months which, like so many leeches, can be attached to any object it seeks to devour. Its power of suction through these months is so great that some believe it can suck a hole through a ship's bottom. In a word, it comes the nears to being “ mouth all over" of any animal yet discovered. SOME years since We attended a meeting at the Tabernacle, which was addressed by the President, when he kindly explained to the Saints what he was going to do with their money. Said he, “ You want to know What I am going to do with all this money I am getting, well, I’ll tell you, I am going to buy up Jackson County with it.” A few Sundays after, We had the happiness to hear him preach again, when he said: “ I tell you, Jackson County will not be near big enough to hold this people, Why, I wdnt the whole of Jackson County for my own family.” A short time since, Bro. Geo. A. preached on Copms of Enocn’s ADVOCATE can be procured the text “that it is harder for a needle to go at Raybould’s Book Store, two doors north through the eye of a camel, than for a rich man of the Walker corner. It will be no use ento enter, etc.,” and endeavored to prove that quiring at Dwyer’s for it, as that “live newsthe poverty of the Saints would be their salva- man ” refused to sell it, as “ it was contrary to tion. He was followed by our beloved Presi- his principles! " People who have any respect dent, who stated that he would make every man for his principles will, therefore, confer a favor rich in a short time who would put himself upon him by not asking for it. under his control. He evidently does not want to lose his control of “ his people ” in the next world. BBIGHAM’S motto is “Watch and Prey.” What an exquisite piece of irony the Deseret News has placed under its head, in the motto, “ Truth (?) and Liberty (?)." .2, -- V'rv-V‘-'-‘~- "My. 0,.-- - - |
