BRANDON Editor RION BONACCI PUBLICATION DAY 18-Fo- ot Publisher Society Editor PEDRO, Calif., Men often go down to the sea in ships, re- turn and marry the girl left behind. THURSDAY With Fred Rebell of Australia, things were different. He went down to the sea after the girl married someone else "just to show her that I have real stuff in me." j Now, wherever she is, the girl knows Fred Rebell has that "real stuff." Setting a new mark for nerves-a- mi luck in single-hande- d ocean cruising, Rebell lias just arrived here after a lone voyage from Sydney in his sailing skiff, Elaine And, strangely enough, the boat I after tho girl who turned him down. Rebell, who won the title of Australia's "height of folly" navi gator when he arrived here, determined to make his Iouk voyage after reading accounts of Harry Pidgeon, Los Angeles' lone and his four-yeaworld cruise in the yawl Islander. Never before at sea, Rebell,- a contractor, learned navigation from books in three weeks. Then he built the Elaine and set out on his daring voyage. The boat is an ordinary skiff with iscription Rates, per year in advance $2.00 Utah, Thursday, February 9, 1933 MITIXG NUMBER OF CARS IN TRAIN A bill was introduced in the Utah state legislature last ek, entitled: "An act to protect freight from excessive mage, breakage or delay and to promote the safety of em- ayes and travelers upon railroads by limiting the number cars in a train, providing a penalty for the violation there-- ! and others matters properly connected therewith." This bill, from the title, would appear to have been in- jsduceJ as a matter of interest in public welfare and as a jfety measure, but i If an engine may move 70 fully loaded cars with safety, hy may it not move more if only half loaded or empty? Should the D&RCW pull a train out of Colorado ith 71 cars, when it reached the Utah state line that train puld have to be broken up into two sections, with the hiring of another train crew, or one car dropped off. This bill establishes a dangerous precedent inasmuch as endeavors to place with the legislature a right to tell corporations, and even private business just how many ersons must be employed for a given mechanical operation, If the legislature wishes to give real thought to public j ifety, let it consider a few rulings which would make bus jperation more safe. Pass a law which would compel bus pmpanies to place a device in their vehicles which would ib a pin into the driver every time he showed indications of leepiness. That is a real idea for legislation. A few restrictive and beneficial laws might take some of tie ambition of the many people who buy a bus or two, use he highways the public builds and grab the cream cf the iusiness which should go to our largest taxpayers, the rail-ad- ; rail-load- s, s. It might be a splendid idea to teach the fellow with a shoestring investment that he has a few responsibilities toward the public, as well as the individual or concern with housands or millions of dollars at stake. Let's not be too liscrimnatory. j If the shoe were on the other foot Another bill introduced in Utah's legislature last week which is of interest is a bill which would place an extra tax on chain stores, according to the number operated within the f gtate. There are, of course, a few private business interests in the state which might relish the passage of such a measure, The Tmt most of them look at it with askance and disfavor. chain stores pay their local taxes the same as any other concern; there is no equity in an additional tax. And private business interests ask themselves: What if die shoe were on the other foot and they should seek to place a surtax on our business? t S000-mil- yoar-Imii- i j SAID MARK TWAIN Mark Twain once edited a paper in Missouri. One of f his subscribers wrote him he had found a spider in his paper and wanted to know whether it meant good luck or bad luck. This is what Mark Twain answered: Finding a spider in your paper was neither good luck nor bad luck for you. The ""spider was'merely looking over our paper to see which merchant is not advertising so that he can go to that store, spin his web across the door and lead a life of undisturbed peace f ever afterward. The fact is that "buy American" was the Inst of the nationalist purchasing movements to be started in the leading naiiens of the world. There have been "buy French" and "buy German" movements in existence for a long time. And the "buy British" movement of old John Bull is the most complete and most perfect now in existence.
