Hintz, for the purpose of establishing there a gatheritig place for the Mormon converts in the Orient President Joseph V Smith's address was devoted principally to u statement of the duties of all members of the church to the church and her priesthood. President Lorenzo Snow spoke of the duties and obligations of all members of the church if they desired to render themselves in their first life worthy ior their second estate. He referred to the pleasure which the contemplation of work well done in the past was to every one and particularly to the Mor mon people, who had accomplished much in the last years. He said that it was the hope and conviction of all Mormons that the time would come when they would return to Jackson county, Missouri, whence they had been formerly driven out. It would not come for some time, but the younger members of the church would see it. The church would then he reunited, there would be a united order and all should devote themselves to a prepara tion for that time. The speaker closed with a tribute to President Woodruff. Heber J. (Irant said that he believed there were few in the audience who could rise and say truthfully that they had paid their honest tithing. There was a tendency, he said, among1 the people to settle with the Lord on a basis of 10 cents on the dollar; they tried to rob him of the other 90 cents. There were many, too, who have not received their endowments, and looked with indifference upon the subject, and If they were asked if they would be willing to carry out their vows, they would be loth to respond. It was the duty of all the peopletopay their tithing and offering, and their works would be blessed if they were faithful in this duty to their church. Apostle F. T). Richards spoke in much the same vein, recalling that before the revalation as to tithing was re ceived the people gave themselves and all their goods to the church. He advocated teaching the principle of tith ing more in the Sunday schools, that the children might grow up with the Idea in their minds that to pay the tithing was one of the vital principles of salvation. "If we teach them this in their youth,'' he said, "they will take to tbe paying of tithes as natur ally as ducks to water." sixty-eight- h i'resi-tlcn- ii - SECOND DiY. The second day of the annual spring conference of the Mormon church showed a marked increase in attend-ano- e over the opening session. Abraham Owen Woodruff, who was made an apostle at the last October conference, was the first speaker. He referred to the fact that manv Mor mons had connected themselves with religious organizations and secret or ders not countenanced by the church, and said that he regretted that this state of affairs had come to pass, for the gospel as taught by the Mormon faith was all, he said, that was neces sary for them, lie deplored too great rivalry in business matters, as it led to distensions among the people, and what the church needed most was union and Mathias T. Cowley, the other apostle chosen last October, followed, speaking of the work which is being accomplished in the various missions which he had visited of late. He touched with pride upon the work of the Mutual Improvement associations, which, he said had added 13,0"" members to their ranks.- He said tliut the present rumors of war were but verifications of the prophecies which had foretold the warfare of the uali"ns, from the effect of which the Morm uis would be safe and unharmed. President (ieorge Q. ( 'annon read a a portion of the Doctrine and Covenants, and Preside nt W'ilford Woodruff spoke for nearly half an hour.
