Show ENflEAURER lEGORATIONS C Citizens Urged to Beautify the Streets and Buildings I I THE INTERMOUNTAIN RALLY I Final Arrangements Have Been flade For It The Trains Are Now Moving Westward West-ward and Half a Dozen Specials Will Arrive Here This Afternoon A Thousand Ohioans Will Reach the City at Midnight Complete Com-plete Advices by Wire The local Christian Endeavorers are calling upon the people of the city tp decorate and to do it today Hardly apiece a-piece of bunting Is to b seen on any building in the city and before nightfall night-fall there will be from 1000 to 2000 strangers here and by 9 oclock tomorrow to-morrow morning the streets In the business section of the city will 0 lined with visitors The Christian En deavorers askare all these thousands of people to come here from the east and see nothing but row after row of plain brick and stone walls nothing to indicate that there is sufficient public pride and public spirit In Salt Lake to make the city look as attractive attrac-tive as possible nothing which will look like a mark of welcome and of appreciation of their visit There is no other city in the United States which would not have had a holiday appearance for an occasion of this kind and every city in the country where a national convention of Christian Chris-tian Endeavor societies has ever been held the buildings have been almost covered by a mass of flags bunting and red white and blue streamers and yet on the eve of a day that will see a host of 10000 or 15000 within the gates of this city there is not as much asa as-a hundred yards of bunting to be seen the entire length of Main street The members of the local committee feel that they have exhausted every effort to have the business section of the city decorated The subcommittees have visited the merchants and businessmen business-men everywhere and have tried to impress them with the importance of the matter They have met with some I success that 13 if the promise of some I merchants to decorate their stores can be regarde as success but the decora tions themselves are not yet forthcoming forth-coming AN APPEAL T THE MAYOR The committees did not confine themselves them-selves to their own efforts in this matter i mat-ter but they tried to get a public expression I ex-pression from the chief official of the I city government which would call the matter to the attention of the citizens i I I tt entS I The following l letter was sent to Mayor Glendinning four days ago Salt Lake City June 28 1897 Hon James Glendinning Mayor Salt Lake City Dear SlrThe Salt Lake committee commit-tee of 97 connected with the InterMountain Inter-Mountain Christian Endeavor rally deeming It desirable that the citizens of Salt Lake City decorate their places of business and their homes In honor I of the immense concourse of people from all parts of the United States and Canada who will be In the city July 35 in attendance at the rally above named respectfully requests you If you can consistently do so to make a public request to this effect We feel that a proclamation from you embodying this suggestion would meet with the same result as Is accomplished ac-complished In other cities where the Christian Endeavor conventions are held viz elaborate and beautiful decorations and we further think the citizens of Salt Lake City will not wish to be less thoughtful or appreciative apprecia-tive when the request Is properly presented pre-sented to them Very respectfully MISS EMMA B EBERHARD Corresponding Secretary This letter has been filed away among the archives of the mayors office and not even a reply has been sent to the committee who feel that a word from the mayor would have accomplished much muchTe Endeavorers call attention to the fact that the national holiday is an preaching and that public decorations might very well be made In connection connec-tion with it as well as the Intermountain Intermoun-tain rally and they urge every citizen who ha the welfare of the city at heart to do his utmost to accomplish something some-thing in this rerpect today The decora tion committee of the Endeavorers are obliged to confine their own efforts to beautifying the halls which will be used for state headquarters and the tabernacle and theater where services I will be held Sunday and for this purpose pur-pose wU the mEmber of the subcommittees music and San Fran tees on finance Frm i cisco 97 have been added to the decoration I decor-ation committee to assist Jn completing this work today TABLE SIn S-In regard to the facilities of the entertainment en-tertainment committee for supplying I table accommodations to the visitors the urgent appeal which the committee I has resulted I made on Wednesday night resule in much good for many persons called I at the headquarters yesterday and left II to notices that they were prepared have persons assigned to their private I houses for meals While this hsr been I a great assistance to the om iilttee l the number of places to which the visitors vis-itors can be assigned is still far from sufficient for the purpose and Mr I sufcient PUtoOSl Shepard and her assistants will move I Shepar their headquarters from the OMeara i block to the reception room In the Y I i M C A building No 28 West Second South street and they will fs be there i all day prepared to receive offers from all who are willing to provide meals for the visitors in their homes I FIRST DETACHMENT I The first detachment of the great crowds which will soon b pouring into the city have arrived but the number is I not large enough to be noticeable yet Both trains from the east over the Rio Grande Western yesterday arrived In two sections and the one due at 12 15 this afternoon will also have two sections sec-tions The first special Christian Endeavor En-deavor train Is due here at 2 oclock this afternoon and It will contain the Morrlll party The next purely Endeavor En-deavor train will 0 here at 7 oclock tomorrow morning and after that special trains carrying the various state delegations will arrive ar-rive one after another so that by noon tomorrow there will doubtless be between t be-tween 5000 and 10000 people here the number depending upon the speed with I which the railroads between hare and f Dnv er can handle so many trains One r great difficulty Is that nearly all the trains that have arrived in Denver from the east in the last two days have I been several hours behind time EXTRA TRAINS Three extra trains left Denver for Salt Lake yesterday which have rot been included in any previous schedule They are carry 300 overflow passengi each those persons who are not attached at-tached to any state delegation and who in many cases perhaps are not members mem-bers of the Christian Endeavor = ocie ties They arrived in Denver from ta rious parts of the east and i w as found impossible to carry them here either on the regular or special trains so It was necessary to run the extra trains for I their accommodation The first of these trains will arrive here at 4 oclock tills I afternoon the second at 530 and the I third at 7 oclock In addition to the special trains and the Individual travel the Rio Grande Western ha received word from Denver of nearly 50 special cars containing small contract paries which will have to be attached to the I regular and special trains arriving here during the next few days Among these parties are the Janeway party of Columbus r I Co-lumbus 0 and two carloads from Decatur i i De-catur Ill which will arrive here with r the Canada and New Hampshire train Saturday morning The Johnstovne N Y party the Dorldlno party from Chicago Chi-cago and the Bridgeport party are among those that will arrive today FINAL COMMITTEE arrived from the east hv that time and the public in general bo that the meeting can be made a general enthusiasm affair preparatory to the rally The last Issue of the local Chn ton Endeavor will be distributed at the meeting in the First Congregational Church tonight It Is the souvenir number num-ber and contains a complete pro gramme of all the events of the next few days IN NEVADA Arrangements
