AL AND INTERNATION- AL PROBLEMS INSEPARABLE FROM LOCAL WELFARE. 5 During the years from 1930 to 1934, there was no sadder reading than the business and financial magazines. They were full of news, and practically all of the news was bad. Their charts of business activity were "lower than a snake's belly" as the slang phrase has it, and at one time, in the summer and fall of 1932, the curve just about went off the bottom of the page. While we aren't experiencing boom today and while there are plen ty of dark spots in the picture notably the undiminished unemployed total comparatively speaking, there is optimism in business reports. Even the new tax bill, though business lead ers regard it as a monstrosity, is more or less obscured by good industrial news. A survey of the leading business publications shows that the best baramoters when the usual season al adjustment is made are still on the rise. Leading industries are do-- ing better than was anticipated for the summer period, and seem to be looking forward with confidence to great improvement in the fall. Consensus of opinion is that the old bogey of an election year being a bad business year is "out." Politics is na turally a factor in business but it will be a minor factor this year, ac cording to many of the experts. There are various reasons for that One is that business leaders are of the opinion that if Roosevelt is reelected, he will have a much harder time than in Yy n the past getting "experimental" through the Congress. And if legis-latio- Landon is elected, are confident that he ment." business leaders will not "experi Here are some items of interest, from Business Week, Wall Street Journal, government reports and other authorltive sources: briefed FARM MACHINERY: of the scientific laboratories and the most modern of business methods, life is constantly becoming harder for the criminal. A system recently put into operation by one of the country's outstanding law enforcement agencies, the Massachusetts State Police, typifies the way in which modern business methods are applied to new problems in crime detection. Its former system of maintaining records at the Bureau of Identification at the State House in Boston classified the records according to. the height and weight of the criminals. It became evident that some better way of segregating the records should be used, since criminals MOTORS: This industry has been the most active of all in the last two years, is still going ahead. Two mem bers of the Big Three Chrysler and General Motors are looking forward to the best in their eventful history. Demand for both trucks and cars holds up extremely well, and no signs of saturation can be seen. Related industries tires, batteries, other equipment are na turally prospering- along with the car profit-perio- ds - builders. This industry isn't establishing any records so far as making money is concerned, but is showing betterment. That is reflected in stimulated railroad' buying During the first five months of this year, freight car purchases were in excess of the entire year of 1935. Biggest beneficiary from railroad purchasing is steel. RAILROADS: CONSTRUCTION : Residential con- tracts are about 60 per cent ahead of the same period last year. construction also has improved. STEEL: Has passed 70 per cent of capacity and, like so many other industries, is more active than at any time since 1930. Outlook is good, with large orders from motors, rail roads, utilities and others anticipated. TEXTILES: Sales have been in creasing, with orders ahead of production. This is opposed to seasonal experience, inasmuch as early fall is usually the best period for cotton goods. Reason for the change is ascribed to low inventories on the part of merchants, resulting in a rush to build up their depleted stocks. And so it goes, all down the business line. . Big summer boost to business is going to follow the bonus payment a fact that has to be admitted, whether you regard the bonus as being justified or as an organized "lobby" victory. Total bonus payment comes to $2,000,000,000, but veterans will not get all this, inasmuch as the bulk of them had borrowed on their certificates. But cash payment will exceed a billion dollars, and it is estimated that 70 per cent of that will be spent practically at once, with only 30 per cent being held as savings. Real estate firms, automobile makers, and all manner of retail goods business are prospering as the Baby Bonds are cashed and disbursed. So, to some extent, are the leeches who sell worthless property, wild-cstock, etc. Various reputable concerns, seeking to protect veterans from such crooks, have run newspaper adds urging bonus recipients to hang on to their bonds whenever possible.
