Brooke tor tho defense I did not see Marshall Jo well before tho publication of the statements until last night I came to New York not knowing know-ing I was subp ned I came because 1 was interested officially in this trial I came to New York last night District Attorney Boll then called Col Bliss to the stand He testified I am the complainant and I selected the Rockwell letter as a comparison I saw it on the morning of the 26th I saw the Jewel letter after the Rockwell letter was selected because it WAS desired to have one that could be photolitho eraphed with the Jewell letter and because it was alto the nearest in date b I alleged Morey letter Crossexamined I saw all the paper in the case or nearly all I saw the ex hibiU but did not know they wen stolen I ssked if it came direcy throug the bands ofLoui J Post and I was informed in-formed that it did not Mr Bell then staled that he rested tht case reserving the privilege however 01 calling at witnesses Expert flaylo and the Lynn postmaster with one of hi clerks Counsel Howe May it please th court it is a matter of congratulation that the prosecution hava terminatec their socalled case We arc delights to harts an opportunity to provo the in noccnco ofMr Philp and incidentally of course in behalf of the newspaper called Truth This defense will substantiate substan-tiate the letter as published and prove the expert official testimony or the prosecution W will produce gentlemen occupying high positions who will testify t the genuineness of Gar fields signature i We will also show beyond n doubt thit the letter is not in the handwriting of Philp but is the boa fide signature of the republican residential nominee At the conclusion of Mr Howl pcech applause wa heard and Judge iravis ordered the officers
