I was more motivated to attend lectures and study knowing that my professors knew my name, my strengths and my weaknesses. I worked hard to show them my appreciation of their time and to make them proud. DSU faculty are exceptionally good at redirecting ones focus from grades to the wonderful process of learning. As a result, I never felt pressured as a student. Moreover, education is not the only aspect of DSU that has improved over the years. Great effort put forth by our staff and community members h&ve led to DSU students making-aappear-- , ance on the .Today show, having one of our students crowned as Miss Utah, and sending four of our students to conduct research at Stanford University. Whether people notice or choose to ignore it, DSU is moving on and growing fast. Instead of dwelling on the past, DSU builds upon it. I choose to follow DSUs lead as opposed to trailing in its tracks. You should too. n r ; B U i j t, by the demand for meat. Though DSU is not an R-- l institution, a status given to universities that engage in extensive research, it is continuously increasing its funding for research with more students writing up bills and professors working on requesting grants. A gradual change is appropriate with a matter like this, as a sudden transition does not necessarily entail major benefits. An R-- l status would cost our faculty members a lot of their time, which would, in turn, deprive our students of that personal relationship with professors the very thing that makes DSU so Vegetarianism has numerous health benefits Living a healthy life can mean so many different dungs. I completely understand that. col,an full-fledg- bury said. Even DSU's students have changed over the years. Smaller class sizes have allowed faculty members to individualize their teaching approaches and interact with students on a more personal level. A larger number of students are engaging in independent research under close supervision of their professors with every passing year. Such practices produce stronger recommendation letters and give DSU students a wider range of experiences they can discuss in their personal statements. I dont see a reason why DSU should not be taken seriously ... My students are very dedicated, Gaspari said. They have excellent goals. They want to go to medical schools, dental schools (and) graduate schools. i address Students year in school, hometown and ' ar bachelors degrees, Sains- ? should also include Fur graduate of University of Utah, said her friends who attended DSU always intended to eventually transfer to a different school. People just party a lot and dont take education seriously, Burnett said. Douglas Sainsbury, the program adviser for the biology department, and Martina Gaspari, assistant professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, said they were not surprised to hear such remarks from other students. Both have confirmed DSU has a reputation of being a party school and stressed how important it is to move on from that mindset, for DSU has moved on a long time ago. Students from other institutions in Utah consider DSU a transition school a place where people go to complete their general education, save up money, and move on to finish their undergraduate work elsewhere. I have hammered out some healthy living basics over the span of almost a decade of trial and enror that Id like to share with) ou. With New Years Day come and gone, maybe you decided to cut out meat or just cut back on how much meat youre consuming in favor of your overall health. Im a fan of moderation. While I still eat poultry and fish, I have been trying to cut back on how much of those meats I intake. For those on the fence about becoming vegetarian or for those who just dont understand why someone would choose to live life without steak, here are some doings to consider. t Health A Red and processed meats have been long scrutinized to f I Black bean burgers are an inexpensive way to eat meatless Opinion diets are more sustainable Editor Diana Fossett says plant-base- d Sustainability According to an article by NPR, A Nation of Meat Eaters: See How It All Adds Up, the United States was the second highest consumer of meat in the world, consuming on average more than 270 pounds of meat per person yearly. That is a ridiculous amount, especially considering, according to the article, it takes 74.5 square feet of land for grazing and growing feed crop to produce a quarter-poun- d hamburger. Cruelty Animal cruelty, especially toward livestock, is, unfortunately, not news to most people. On the PETA website, there are articles detailing the kinds of lives that commercially-farme- d animals live. From the chickens kept in total confinement and in a state of forced growth via drugs, to how some cows survive a gunshot and are skinned and gutted while still alive, PETA paints an atrocious picture of the animal cruelty that is fueled SBP determine their effect on human health. The World Health Organization published an article in October on red meats connection to cancer. Also, if you became vegetarian to lose weight, you may be in for a disappointment. There is plenty of junk food available for vegetarians, and if you arent careful when cutting out animal protein, you can find yourself suffering nutritional deficiencies. Plant-base- d proteins, like beans and nuts, are prime sources of protein and incredibly satiating, so, for your healths sake, step away from the empty carbs and say hello to the plant carbs. Cost To address the concern that healthy eating is expensive, I want to share one of my favorite vegetarian recipes. Its the black bean burger, and this recipe makes four burgers: -- 1 -- 1 can black beans $0.89 cup brown rice $0.89bag - 2 eggs $1 .19six-carto- n - 4 lettuce leaves $0.99head - 4 burger buns $1 .25pack -- Total $5.21 (prices from local Smiths) Preheat oven to 350 degrees, and lightly grease a baking sheet. Mash black beans to a paste with a fork, and add the rice and eggs to the mixture. I recommend seasoning, which can either be as simple as a tablespoon of salt and black pepper or as exotic as you want. Form the mixtures into patties, place on baking sheet and cook for 10 minutes on each side. You now have delicious black bean burgers and one more reason in favor of being a vegetarian. |
