The composite wing at Pope will form a team with the 82nd Airborne Division. Although neither of the two new commands has been formally named yet, one command. Air Mobility Command, will include the bulk of airlift assets as well as a considerable portion of the tanker force. This integration of airlifters with tankers is geared to better enable the Air Force to supply "Global Reach, Global Power." Over time, several bases currently belonging to SAC will transfer to AMC along with their tanker aircraft. Air Mobility Command will also be responsible for air rescue, operational support airlift, aeromedical evacuation and the worldwide coordination of tanker scheduling. All of these forces will be assigned to AMC except for and tankers assigned to theater commands or specially designed composite wings. AMC will be the gaining command for the Reserve units with tankers, except for the Reserve by Capt. Tom Dolney MAC Public Affairs A-lO- SCOTT AFB, 111. (AFNS)-Milit- ary Airlift Command officials announced several changes planned for the command as part of the overall restructuring of the Air Force announced Sept. 16 by Secretary of the Air Force Donald Rice. Secretary Rice described a significant restructuring of the Air Force that will cause three major commands based in the United States-Strate- gic Air Command, Tactical Air Command and Military Airlift Command to merge into two new commands Air Mobility Command and Air Combat Command. Within MAC, restructuring will cause its two airlift divisions, the 322nd at Ramstein AB, Germany, and the 834th at Hickam AFB, Hawaii, to both be eliminated. The command and control of worldwide airlift operations will be centralized in a tentatively named "Mobility Center" which will function as a field operating agency of Headquarters MAC. Elimination of the airlift divisions will streamline and flatten the command and control structure of airlift operations and serve to accelerate reaction time and improve the command and control processes. Two current MAC bases will become homes for new composite wings Andrews AFB, Md., and Pope AFB, N.C. Across the Air Force, several wings are slated to become composite wings and will operate more than one type of aircraft. Some wings have already been operating as composite organizations for a long time, while others will be newly formed. The 89th Airlift Wing at Andrews AFB already operates more than one type of aircraft: Air Force One, UH-lN- VC-137- s, C-13- C-20- C-12- s, F-1- C-13- C-13- LcairagHey onew WASHINGTON (AFNS)-Lang- ley AFB, Va., has been named the future headquarters for Air Combat Command, one of two new commands to be created as the Air Force dissolves Tactical and Strategic Air commands, as well as Military Airlift Command. Air Mobility Command and Air Combat Command will act as independent force providers to theater commanders in some contingencies, and as force augmenters for PACAF, USAFE and other Air Force component commands in other scenarios. MAC officials emphasized that the planning for these changes is ongoing, and as a result, specific details and timing of changes will be announced later. headquarters nates the artificial distinction between tactical and strategic airpower," McPeak said.
