Show Usy the Insuring widespread hospitality hospi-tality for the armed forces, United Service Organizations has already formed local citizens citi-zens committees in 275 communities com-munities and is laying plans in nearly 6,000 more. According to Dr. Harry A. Winn, director of USO citizens and committees com-mittees and councils, these local volunteer units will operate mostly in towns where there are no USO recreational centers. Thus they will help provide constant service to troops In virtually every corner of the United States, he said. Most of the communities now lined up participated actively in the USO campaign last year. "The men in the camps," Dr. Wann said, "need the support of all civilian communities then-Interest then-Interest expressed in a cheering word or in some tangible form of service. They want no pampering tor sentimentalizing, of course. Yet, they DO want to hear from home and to maintain normal and natural natur-al ties with civilian life. "Volunteer service of this character char-acter is not only an expression of every citizen's desire to sustain the men who are defending the nation, but also helps to sustain one's own spirit." A rapidly developing function func-tion of the citizens committee, Dr. Wann reported, is that of helping to furnish the "day-roomsf" "day-roomsf" set aside by the Army itself as lounges within the camps. For defense workers the local USO citizens committee has a room registry, organizes clubs, parties, classes and health programs and acts as an intermediary for fen-larging fen-larging friendships. Committee volunteers are trained by their unit and also by the Defense De-fense recreation committee and other local agencies. "By interacting with all the other major seryices of the USO program," Ll. Wann said, "the ciu-zens ciu-zens committee is especially vital to the whole recreational plan. It marshals local resources for USO's more centralized activities and thus binds them together."
