Not because the cele- B ,, bratjpn was so grand, for we have B had better ones, but because there B f , w.ts so much national pride and B enthusiasm in the hearts of those B f. celebrating When the news B reached us on the morn- B ing of the nation's holiday that B the Spanish fleet under Admiral B Cei'vera had been destroyed by B .Admiral Sampson, that General B , " Shatter had ordered Santiago to surrender and the city was doomed, doom-ed, that the Manilla expedition had taken the Ladrone islands and had landed safely at Cavite, who can wonder why the people were so enthused. The glad ringing of old Independence bell came as but a faint echo to the boom of the mighty guns which had won us such recent victories in the cause of liberty. Joyous shouts went up from those who rejoice at the success of our army and navy and they shout praises to the gallant men who have led them on to victor'. But with it all comes the sad strain of grief from the bereaved, those who have given their loved ones for their country. In our rejoicing let us not forget these. |
