Show ' PEOPLE AND THINGS BY REX HILL Do you think you will be draft ed? Plow will the conscription act affect you? These are the ques tions on everyone's mind today. Most everyone still hopes Britain will win the war and these same people think Willkie is talking toe much. Some people are beginning to say that they think Roosevelt will go down in history as one of our greatest presidents. Others feel that our nation is spending too much and taxes are bound to go up. Most anyone will agree that v.hoever is elected president will have little effect upon whether or not we will be at war six months from now. Most of us have few facts to base our opinions on but are largely moved by prejudice. We may be against Roosevelt because we think he has too much power but tail to think about the fact that we still have a free chance to either vote for or against him. The Republican party is branded and tagged as the appeasement or war party by the Democrats because the people are prejudiced against anyone who may slightly sympathize with Hitler. Hit-ler. Republican party leaders try-to try-to play the Democratic administration administra-tion up as a bureaucracy because people don't like bureaucracies. The people do not reason that there will be bureaus and departments depart-ments in the government no matter which party is in power. Democratic Demo-cratic party leaders accuse the Republicans Re-publicans of having unlimited money mon-ey to win an election. These same Democrats probably secretly wish they had plenty to spend too. People read the headlines in newspapers and form much of theii opinion from a flash phrase. Clever Clev-er headlines will play on their prejudices and quite often will have more effect than the rest of the story. In Idaho politics the issues and campaign strategy of both parties is beginning to come to the front. Infer Bad Conditions The Republican party is obviously obvious-ly going to base their campaign on a so-called expose of the life of Chase Clark, Democratic candidate candi-date for governor. First volley was fired last week when certain charges were made that conditions in Mayor Clark's home town of Idaho Falls were positively unbearable. un-bearable. It was asserted that gambling, drinking and other forms of so-called vice were the com mon thing. The inference was that Chase Clark sponsored such things. Naturally, most people are prejudiced preju-diced against such conditions and whether or not they are any worse in Idaho Falls than in other Idaho cities is unimportant because the whole idea is to create the impression impres-sion that Idaho Falls is really the worst place in the state and Clark was nominated by Ross' long dormant dor-mant machine. If they can hang this ill feeling onto Chase Clark they have won a point. This in spite of the fact that Ross has been in such poor health that he has not even engaged in his local fcomniunfUy politics fcjr the last several years. Next move will be to tell everyone that if Chase Clark gets elected the Clarlts will have a death grip on the Idaho citizenry. citizen-ry. Beehive of Employees Main Democratic issue will be to attack the Republican administration adminis-tration with increasing of taxes and raiding the state treasury. Republicans Re-publicans will be accused of failing to do anything in the last two years. The whole idea will be to show that they are a bunch of ruthless, machine politicians with little regard for the taxpayer. This will be a play upon prejudice but much of it will be backed up with factual evidence how much will be seen within a short time? Republican politicos will be ac. 1 cused of slacking off on Idaho's roadbuilding program and the de- velopment of a burdensome bureau 1 cracy of state government through 1 the appointment of numerous part. ' time commissions and boards. Peo. ' pie don't like a bee hive of govern-' govern-' ment employees. Let's watch : closely and see what the strato-; strato-; gists of both parlies bring forth. When you read this or that accusation accu-sation in your morning newspapei check your blood pressure and sec , w-hether it touched the spot where you are most tender. We all pride ourselves in being fair but are woj Our side of the story always looks the best. It's the other fellow win is wrong.
