Show iFROM THE UTH WOMEN 1 Rare Belies ancLFine Handiwork for the Worlds Fair EXHIBITS FROM THE SOUTH I I Utah Cotton Fabrics Embroidered Woven and Spun by Haud I I Some Ancient Relics Contributed by the Ladies Tho Educational Exhibit Complete Collection from the Institutions of Learning Several cases of exhibits for the V omens o-mens department of the Worlds fair were received yesterday at the office of the territorial board of lady managers in the Constitution building They consisted con-sisted of ancient relics and rare and curious I ous specimens of womens handiwork Among the exhibits from Washington county is a curious Indian water jug manufactured of native grasses and also a unique article of head gear of the same material and a piece of decorated pottery j made by an Indian girl There are a set of dishes manufactured of Utah sulphur and a cast of a hand of county the same material sent from Millard Mrs PaulinaLyman of Parowan sends up some counterpanes manufactured of Utah crown cotton spun and woven by hand A very handsomely embroidered spread also of hand manufacture and made of Utah cotton was received and a knit spread of the same material I Mrs Lyman also sends several very handsome specimens of handmade straw hats The ladies of Springville contribute two I pillows and bed drapery of handsome workmanship and design manufactured of linen from Utah grown flax Among the relics received is an old I sabre from St George said to have been dug up in 1851 by a Mr Baldwin When discovered the encrustation of rust indicated encrustton dicated that it had origin fly been three feet long but when the rust was removed only eighteen inches lemained Mary K Carter of Minersville sends an English penny of 17S7 two bibles printed in 1813 a linen sampler embroidered in South Vales in 1793 and another made in 1705 also a bridal veil made in 1836 by a twelveyear old girl and a lace cap made in 1833 The same lady sends some very handsome mineral specimens A quantity of soap bark comes from St George This curious bark was used before be-fore the days of cheap soap and is said to be superior in cleansing properties to some of the fancy brands of modern manufacture man-ufacture Two jars of silk cocoons come from St George A very curious sample of insect carving carv-ing also comes from St George It is a block ol wood eaten by insects that closely resembles fantastic carving Rockville sends up a lifelike clay model of Indian pappoose in a wicker cradle such as the Indian women carry upon their backs Mrs H M Dongall of Springville contributes con-tributes an old china plate with blue decorations dec-orations bearing date of 1741 also a pair of very ancient slippers and an old candlestick can-dlestick and snuffers of curious design The ladies association of Tooele county was organized too late to prepare an exhibit ex-hibit but not t be outdone by the other counties of the territory the ladies raised a very handsome cash fund to aid in decorating dec-orating the Utah building and this was handed to President Richards over yesterday yester-day by Mrs Rhoda M Lyman Mrs Fred Clawson of this city has sent in a very handsomely decorated tray of china A gypsy fortune telling scene is depicted and it is a very handsome work of art Another elegant piece of art work prepared pre-pared by the ladies is the coatofarms of Utah embroidered in gold on white satin which will be placed on the silk portieres in the Utah building |
