Show Volume XVIII Issue III The Ogden Valley news Page 13 July 15, 2010 Fun at Utah’s Ski and Snowboard Resorts Division of Wildlife Resources—WildFind! Summer Looking for something fun to do this sum- course utilizing natural terrain features. There Utah’s Division of Wildlife Resources has some unique and useful projects planned for the summer. Fishing Merit Badge Helping boy scouts earn merit badges is an event that everyone anticipates. The scouts get hands-on expertise in earning their fishing merit badges, and DWR personnel get to introduce a new generation to the joys of fishing. In mid-July, the DWR will bring boats to Oaks Park Reservoir and take scouts onto the water, working with them to catch fish and to complete their fishing merit badges. This event will take place on July 13-16 and 20-23 at Oaks Park Reservoir (near the High Uintas Camp, north of Vernal) Spending a Night with Utah’s Bats This summer, DWR biologists will pull some all-nighters in Northeastern Utah to catch and study Utah’s bat populations. The biologists use mist nets to trap the bats safely. Then, they extract the bats from the nets, gather essential biological data and return the bats unharmed to the wild. Snagging Bear Hair for DNA Study A bear’s nose can smell tempting scents from miles away. Biologists are counting on this fact as they launch a new statewide study throughout the summer. The biologists will build barbed-wire corrals in five different areas and then hang scent packets above the corrals. When the bears try to get to the packets, the barbed wire will snag their fur and provide convenient DNA samples for biologists. From the samples, researchers will be able to identify individual bears and link them to particular areas and relatives.
