This annual event originally began as a fundraiser for a Salt Lake City community member, Nikki Breedlove, who was injured in New York City while working for Fashion Week in 2013. The event has morphed into a fundraiser to raise funds and awareness for clean air in Utah. “Our purpose was always to bring the community together,” says Leigh Cornu, event organizer. Cornu has a background in dance, having taught for over 17 years. She had an idea to create an event that brought together dancers, musicians, artists, and performers to share the stage. She asked her friend Breedlove to assist her in putting this together, but when Nikki was nearly killed after being hit by a car while walking across the street in Manhattan, Leigh saw the opportunity for the idea she had to serve her friend. “I was called by Nikki’s employer and asked if I had any ideas for a fundraiser for Nikki,” Cornu said. “We put my idea into motion, and in four weeks, we were able to raise a significant amount of money for Nikki while at the same time celebrate how beautiful and fragile life is. It was a really special event.” Breedlove and Cornu decided make the event an annual occurrence, and support the community that supported Breedlove so much during her recovery. The third Annual Utah Light as Air will be at 6 p.m., on Saturday, April 22, at the Rose Wagner Theater, 138 W. Broadway in Salt Lake City.
