Show May 1 1 Page 9 1995 Helping people with problems is project PEOPLE'S goal ask them to be "natural helpers" and train the students in specific helping by Thomas Ori staff writer skills These programs mushroomed across the slate Within 6 to X years the program found its way onto many college campuses On CPU's campus a network known as Project PEOPLE or peer educators of positive life experiences formed It is a branch of the BACCHUS program BACCHUS is a national organization Icadcrshi p teams arc across the country in junior high schools and colleges Its members assist fellow students visit Peer other schools and make presentations They work in the community and help people with problems The idea of peer leadership started at a high school in Washington It was having problems with a number of students committing suicide The administration collaborated to find out what could he done to slop this prob- pulling together peer network programs When BACCHUS was formed it was called Boosting Alcoltol Consciousness Concerning Health of University Students Three years ago they made the acronym BACCHUS They also expanded into health and wellness needs instead of limiting themselves to elated problems to AIDS awareness and pcrsonalemotional health awareness Project PEOPLE received a lot of support with their training programs lem They looked at who students go to for assistance when they have problems They noticed an informal help who toyed with Hunter KingTPhoto by DeFriez alcohol-r- network existed within the student community They asked the students “Who do you go to when you need to talk about problems?'
