It's really helped in terms of faculty diversity" he explained “I also think the BDAC has been an incredibly necessary addition" Severeid discovered when he went one-year-o- ld mid-Augu- st 1 I rfwrt I fc T' -- on his sabbatical in 1980 that he hud tremendous freedom at CEU More than his colleagues This is something that he's really enjoyed Oik of the negatives he encountered in the past 19 years is CEU dropping the football program “I didn't like when they dropped the football program I didn't like the way it was handled I didn't care that much that they decided to drop football or anything for that matter Maybe ifthey had done it for what I thought were the right reasons I wouldn't have minded so much They (the administration) attempted to protect themselves under misleading reasons Some of the people in a faculty meeting were led to believe or maybe falsely assume that some of the money from football would go to academics - that was not true I do not care whether they dump the football basketball or the debate program As long as they do it for what most of us consider to be the right reasons" Severeid and his wife Darlene have a son lie and his family will leave in for Rhode Island where he hopes to complete his doctorate lie plans to write his dissertation on either "Vietnam War fiction " or "llie History and Development of the Novel us a Literary Genre" I le will slay for nine months and return to CEU in June of 996 A replacement will not he hired as the department will cover his absence internally other faculty will try to pick up his classes and hope that there will not be a significant increase next year Severeid said he will work for CEl at least one year after his return csvicc iftrr A'' and experienced a “gigantic culture shock" when he came to Price I le was out of UCLA in 976 (a dedicated Bruin fan to this day) and there weren't many jobs available at that lime All of his professors told him that if he found a job he better take it because jobs were hard to find So he did “1'lie sad irony" lie said “is that the guy I replaced had died that summer in a car accident "When I came to (Vice I expected it to look like Jeremiah Johnson country like llchcr City or something But it wasn't It was a desert and that didn't thrill me at first My parents always look us to the desert on vacation so moving here wasn't anything excitedly new to me But the area is beautiful “I lived in (he Sessions Dorms (culled the East Dorms at that time) when I came here for about 8 weeks The local area was booming from the mining industry so there was no place to live for a while It was pretty funny The studentsdidn't know I was a teacher until school started and I'd already been there for a couple of weeks They were pretty rowdy until they found out
