Wolf Creek Water Users Contest Proposed Rate Hikes By Shanna Francis Ogden Valley News Water users in the Eden area who are on Wolf Creek culinary and secondary water systems are going to battle over proposed cost increases by the water company owners who specialize in resort management and development. An initial hearing date of October 6 had been scheduled before the Utah Public Department of Public Utilities and Public Service Commission for the proposed rate increase. Homeowners representing the current water users were successful in having the hearing postponed until legal council could be obtained and briefed on the matter. A new date has not been scheduled. Homeowners state that an attorney was retained to represent their interests before the Public Service Commission due to, what they perceive as, overly aggressive accelerated proposed water rate hikes. An approved rate hike would affect over 600 water users in the area. Homeowners are also contesting the metering of their secondary water. According to water user representatives, no other water company in the state meters secondary water use by individual owners. See page 13 for more information. U.S Forest Service 2003 Deer Hunt Update It’s hunting season, and many hunters will be in the outdoors for the 2003 general deer hunt. Even though fire restrictions have been lifted throughout the state of Utah, fire officials are asking that hunters be extremely careful with the use of fire during the hunt. Although the temperatures are cooler; grass, brush, and timber are still very dry, and there is a potential for wildfires. A wildfire can be caused by carelessness with a cigarette or leaving campfires unattended. Hunters are asked to please make sure that all campfires are completely extinguished and cold to the touch before leaving their hunting camps. Costs for suppressing a wildfire can be passed onto those responsible for starting them. The Forest Service would also like to remind hunters who use off-highway vehicles such as four-wheelers, dirt bikes etc. to “Tread Lightly”: Travel only where motorized vehicles are permitted, stay on designated routes, avoid streams, lakeshores, meadows, muddy roads, trails, and steep hillsides. Please contact the closest Forest Service office to your hunting area for the most current and accurate off-highway vehicle information. Open and closed routes are shown on Forest Travel maps, which are U.S. FOREST SERVICE cont. on page 12 Ogden Canyon Clean Up Scheduled for November 1 Mark Saturday, November 1 on your calendar. Neighbors in Eden Hills have organized to oppose an effort by the Eden Incorporation Feasibility Study Committee to spend Weber County tax dollars to fund a formal feasibility of Incorporation study. The study is estimated to cost between $40,000 and $50,000. After the petition was distributed throughout the neighborhood, organizers state that 88% of the Eden Hills’ homeowners signed the petition against the proposed establishment of the city of Eden. The petition states, “If this proposal goes forward, the residents request that this sub-division is not included within the proposed boundaries.” The sub-division is bordered on the west by the community of Liberty, and the planned community of Wolf Creek to the north. Neither is currently within the proposed city boundaries. Summarizing the neighborhood’s strong feelings against incorporation, the petition continues, “ . . . residents demand that this sub-division remain under Weber County jurisdiction.” A copy of the petition, enclosed with signatures of 45 homeowners, was hand delivered to Commissioners Bischoff, Burton, and Cain. Organizers state that the remaining homeowners who failed to sign the petition included three families who were out of town, and another three who were undecided at the time the petition was collected.
