The largest Dumber in tie Listory of the school. The suplement to tbe last Companion contains an article irom our former leacier, Miss Kilpatrick. We have tbe Racquet Vo'. III. No. 2 It is a teat 12 page paper published by tbe Portland High School. We 1 Gladly X We have received a subscription from Andrew Olsen one of our old pupils. Let the readers of tbe Eagle hear from you Andrew. We have received Vol. XIV. No. 7 of the Missouri Deaf Mute Record the first we have seen in a longtime. There have been great improvement! made in its appearance. We notice in the Missouri Record the names of Mcnroc Ingram, Norman Huni, Fred Ellmaker, and J seph Burkhead all old pupils of our principal. Theyouugmen are all doing well. Tbe School for tbe Deaf at Winnipeg, Manitoba, was burned Oct. 27., so says the Companion. This makes at least the fourth of the kind that has been destroyed by fire in America. Too great care connot he exercised, nor too great precaution taken to prevent such a catastrophe. When our esteened contemporary published in the classic city of R me received one ef the first issues of the Eagle it said it looked as if it had been used for a door mat. Wonder what it thinks of the Eagle now. By the way tbe same e. c. has failed to reach us for over a year. It prooably has i.ot strength to get so far from home. Ids'-tutio- n. In an argument recently put forth in an Institution Report for a change of mame the statement is made that children who are dumb but not deaf are not admitted. It says puca children should be educated in the common schools and that a school for the deaf and dumb is no viae for them. We connot agree with the above. If an Institution for the Deaf and D im) or a School for the Dsaf, no raattei what it may be called, I as in its em ploy teacher of articulation, whose huslness is supposed to be to teach children to talk then a dumb child should certainly have a place. Its abilitv to bear should be no bar to its admits on to the school. We know that it is very often the case that a child who can hear and not talk is mentaiy deficient. Such cases of course should be admitted with caution We have lately admitted a girl cf 16 whose hearing is perfect but who is totally dumb. We expect to be able to teach her to talk. Of what use would it have been to have sent this girl to tbe common school? Common school teachers have their hands full with class work and have no time for the special instruction this case would require even if they weie capable of giving it. If changing tbe names of Iosiiutitions tor the Deaf and Dumb to Schools for the Deaf is going to exclude the Dumb then in our opinion tbe names had better remain as they are until such time as schools for the Dumb can be vement on the paper sent out a year or two ago. We put it on our exchange list with pleasure. Missouri Deaf Mute R cord. Great satisfaction iss expressed that the Arkansas Optic has dropped tbe " part of its name, but t even up matters, the Rome Rtg!Mr. of New Ycrk, will hereafter be known as the Deal-MutRevisit). Hiw Deskket Eagle of Utah atd ILe Misouri Record also have new bead f, but we still claim to have the pettiest and most appropriate head of any newspaper in th country. But the head does not m ike a newspaper, so we will not rest on the laurels gained by our artistic name, but will strive to tbly represent tbe deaf-mute- e's deaf-mut- t" silent Iloosiers. The University of Deseret, of Utah branch is teriltory, whose deaf-muthe only school for the deaf in tbe territory, is sadly in need of more room, and an effort is to be made to remove tbe school for the deaf to seme more suitable location, ana put it under a separate management. The next Legislature will have tbe question to settle. Silent Hoosier. te MANITOBA Burning oi MATTERS. the Provincial Dumb Deaf & Institute.
